SPECTACULAR SPORT
AUSTRALIAN SPEED KINGS. Some of the most spectacular broadsiding yet seen at the Kilbirnie Stadium Speedway Is reported to have been displayed by Charlie Spinks and Lionel van Praag, two of the new arrivals from Australia, In the first try-out on the track yesterday. Both riders, who have beeu re-cord-breakers in Australia, were brilliant. The track was heavy after the rain, but each rider registered 21sec. for a lap, which left no doubt as to their ability as “dirt track” riders. Both have made much faster time than that which now stands as the New Zealand record, set up by Wally Kilmister last Saturday, and with two other noted Australians, Arthur Mann and Syd. Perkins, to keep them moving, there should be some very fast times next Saturday night. Of the riders who came to New Zealand ahead of those who arrived this week, Mann and Perkins stand out as the best, and the appearance of these two speedway “stars” will add to the attractiveness of Saturday’s meeting, at which Kilmlnster will be tested to the full. All the Australians are to participate in the Golden Helmet contest, and, with Kilmister right out to beat off the challengers, the racing should be the most spectacular and exciting ever witnessed here. It is a rare occurrence for so many champions to be seen in action at the one meeting. and there is every prospect of the occasion being easily the best of its kind ever staged here. Apart from the Golden Helmet contest, there will be numerous other races, as well as attempts on the record. Other information regarding the meeting is given elsewhere tn ths issue.
