OLD AGE PENSIONS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—On Saturday, November 30, I called at the'Pensions Office to collect my monthly pension, but to my great disappointment I was informed by the pay clerk that lie had no money left. Thi< was a great blow to me. as I had come a good distauce. and was-fully 45 minutes before the hour of closing, and I was told that I would have to call again on Monday. How I was to live over the week-end did not seem to worry the clerk, and as 1 had come to town to draw jny pension and purchase a few goods, I was left in a very embarrassed position over the week-end. As the next pension day will be fall ing a few days before Christmas. I would like, through the courtesy of your columns, to warn other old age pensioners to collect their money early so as not to be left perhaps over the Ynletide season without funds.

It seemed to me to be a deplorable state of affairs that a public office (especially the pensions) should run short of cash—especially on a bank holiday—and that we unfortunates should be put to considerable inconvenience through perhaps the lack of thought in a public office.—l am. etc..

OLD AGE PENSIONER Wellington. December 17.

[“The statement made in the letter is correct,” said the Registrar of Pensions in reply to an inquiry. "It was a case of a very exceptional rush, and the cashier, finding himself running short of funds, had already sent out for extra funds. Had the writer of the letter been content to wait for few minutes he would have received his pension. It was a very exceptional happening, and is never likely to occur again. The next pensions will be available on Friday, 20th inst., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.. the usual week-day hours, and from .10 to 12 'o’clock on Saturday morning.”]
