SITUATION IN CHINA

IMPROVEMENT CONTINUED (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. December 19, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, December 18. According to reports received in London, the situation in China continues to improve. In the south the Cantonese forces are advancing up the West river, and a resumption of normal traffic is expected shortly. • A British gunboat at Weichow reports that no molestation of foreigners has occurred, but they will remain until the Canton occupation is completed. CONDITIONS IN MANCHURIA Shanghai, December 18. An international train conveying foreign Consular officials and journalists for the purpose of ascertaining the actual conditions on the scene of the recent Soviet military operations in Western Manchuria is to-day reported to have returned from Chalantan. The mission is abandoned. It is stated that Red troops threatened the train in the event of a further advance. The real position is therefore obscure.
