A VAIN DREAM’

EMPIRE FREE TRADE HIGHER TARIFF WALL That Empire Free Trade was unlikely to become a practical proposition in the near future was the opinion expressed by Mr. L. A. Paish, His Majesty’s Trade Commisioner, fa his address to the New Zealand Club In Wellington yesterday. Mr. Paish said it might be true that the prosperity of the United States of America was because of a union of States in a common tariff wall. There had been some discussion in Europe in the direction of forming a United States of Europe, with a tariff wall round the outside and free trade within. It seemed inconceivable that for political reasons alone any such customs union could arise. If Great Britain was to maintain her position she would have to get together in larger unions; that was the reason why Empire Free Trade was being advocated. However, it was extremely unlikely that the Dominions would so. drop their tariff barriers. There should be a higher tariff wall round the Empire. The possibilities of the Empire Free Trade proposal coming into the field of practical politics within the near future seemed very doubtful. If a tax was placed on foreign imports the cost of living was going to be raised, and that was the reason why Great Britain had been a free trade country for nearly a century.
