NINE CHARGES OF THEFT Dominion Special Service.
Clu'istchurch, December 19. Nine charges of theft and one of conversion of a car were preferred against John Harold Halliday, aged eighteen, of Addington, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M. Accused was first charged on Mondaylast and remanded to appear to-day. Two further charges of theft had since been preferred. Chief Detective Carroll stated that further charges were pending. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on the two charges of breaking and entering and convicted on the remaining counts, sentence being deferred.
Accused, who pleaded guilty to all the charges, was not. represented by counsel. Chief Detective Carroll said that in September last accused was working for a man named Shipley at Greendale. He took a motor-cycle, an overcoat, and money belonging to other persons there. The motor-cycle broke down and accused returned to the place in the absence of the occupier and removed other articles. He went to Culverden, where he worked for a man named Pester. He took his employer’s car and some petrol and drove off; the car was later recovered in Christchurch. having been damaged to the extent of £3O or £4O. 'When in Christchurch be broke into a house, after which he went back to Greendale to his former employer. Some of the stolen goods had been recovered from secondhand shops, where Halliday had given a fictitious name and address.
