MARSDEN SCHOOL

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES SUCCESSFUL YEAR REPORTED The annual distribution of prizes at Marsden School, Karori, took place yesterday afternoon, the ceremony taking place in the dining-room of the school house. Miss Baber, the principal, in her report, stated that the health of the girls had been good, better in fact than at the old school in Fitzherbert Terrace. She expressed great satisfaction at her own restoration to health, and thanks to Mrs. Crompton Smith and Miss Mayhew, who had charge of the school while she was absent last year. The school had been very full last term, having ninety boarders. Two rooms in the house have had to be used to accommodate classes. The work had shown a steady improvement during the year. Mary Hursthouse had won the medal offered by the French Government to secondary schools. During the year the school had acquired Mr. Cooper’s property at Karori. Much help had been received from the Parents’ Association, and next year it was hoped to have the assembly hall, which would also be the gymnasium, the apparatus for which would shortly be on its way from England. New classrooms were also to be added above the present ones as well as another large studio, an extra cloak-room and a dark-room.

Miss Mayhew and Miss Bridges would be welcomed back from England, said Miss Baber. The former had attended the Headmistresses’ Conference at Leeds. Miss Bridges would return to Fitzherbert Terrace School as headmistress. Miss Galland had joined the school as games mistress from Dartford Training College. Bequest to School.

“A most interesting prize is provided by the kind thought for Marsden by the late Mrs. Ames, who left the school £2OO, the interest to provide a prize or scholarship in housecraft,” said the speaker. “The full amount has not yet been received. The prize will be awarded for the first time next year.” Good work had been done in handicrafts under Miss Hanham, and Mrs. 8. Natusch had taken diction classes during the year. In social work the girls had been able to help St. Mary’s Homes and the Levin Home. For the former they had held a bazaar in September, by which it received £lBO. For the younger members of the home the Karori Preparatory had given the usual Christmas tree party, and Fitzherbert Terrace Preparatory one for the Levin Home. During the year all three schools had contributed liberally to the Melanesian Mission and the Earthquake Relief Fund. Reference was made to Miss Mona Dennehy, an bld girl of the school, who has won the Sara Ann Rhodes Scholarship. Mr. Henderson and Mr. Mabin (members of the board), Mr. Innis (secretary), the Rev. Mr. Kempthorne, and Canon P. James also spoke. Much satisfaction was expressed at the acquisition of the new property, and the visitors were invited to view it The prizes were presented by Mrs. Sprott. A special presentation was made to Aubrey Blacklock, who is leaving school after ten years, during which time she has never been late or absent Prize List The prize list was as follows:— MAIN SCHOOL.
