THE RACING WORLD

EGMONT SUMMER MEETING OPENS ALTERED DATES AFFECT ATTENDANCE BRIGHT GLOW WINS CUP; KNIGHTLIKE THE SPRINT (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Hawera, December 18. The summer meeting of the Egmont Racing Club opened to-day in showery weather, and after rain the previous afternoon and evening the track was soft and slow. Bright Glow won the Cup handsomely from Concentrate and Merry Mint, while the Flying fell to Knightlike from Cimabue and Gold Dawn. H. B. Lorigan’s Trentham stable thus supplied the runner-up in each case. The Nolan Cup saw a comfortable victory by the Aucklander, Pompeius.

The attendance was well below that of the first day last year, and the totalisator returns also decreased, being £16,182, as against £22,357, a decrease of £5545. An inquiry was held into the running of the Nolan Cup, but after evidence had been taken, no action was deemed necessary. OHAWE HURDLES. Horomea and Brigadier Bill. Arm favourites in the hurdles both failed, but whereas Brigadier Bill made a fair showing, Horomea disgraced herself, tailing off a furlong last very early. She never improved her position at any stage of the race. Bonhomme, Joke Form and Royal Acre were in front early from Brigadier Bill and Diana’s Lad. Joko Form, Bonhomme and Royal Acre from Diana’s Lad, Brigadier Bill and Vivo was the order down the back. Royal Acre hit the front half a mile from home, and won by three lengths from Vivo, who got up to beat Bonhomme by nearly a length. Atareria was fourth, followed by Diana’s Lad, Joko Form, Brigadier Bill, and Novar. The winner was always going well, and had he jumped better would have scored even more comfortably. Bonhomme broke down, so it is possible he would have been tough had all gone well with him. Brigadier Bill was still a possibility on the home turn, but lie hit hard here, and that was the end of him. Diana’s Lad ran a fair race, JUVENILE HANDICAP. Only Hunting Day and Clever were seriously considered by backers in the Juvenile Handicap, the former being a hot order. Although he got checked slightly coming Into the straight, the Issue was never really in doubt. Isa and Bon Eve made the pace from Acreline, Hunting Day, Clever and Paratoo. Isa led into the straight from Bon Eve and Clever, but then Hunting 'Day came on and won by two lengths from Clever, who beat Paratoo by a bead. Acreline was fourth, followed by Bon Eve, with Isa r.t a good interval. Green Linnet and Just an Idea were left at the post. The winner was doing his best at the finish, but it was an attractive performance. Clever seemed lucky to beat Paratoo, as the latter did not get away too well.

Gardner, Wanganui.)

TOKAORA HANDICAP. Backers of the favourite, Fernden, in the hack sprint, got a fright from a rank outsider In Peg Black, who. indeed would have won liad she been better placed early. Callapat began best, and led from Fernden, Just So, and Statuary. Just So had dropped back at the half, where Araukuku aud Tentcall had run up. Callapat led Into the straight from Fernden, Tentcall, Statuary and Just So. Fernden was winning nicely when Peg Black swept up and rau him to a neck, with Statuary a head away. Callapat was' fourth, followed by Just So and St. Melba. . , The winner did not appear to be quits at home in the soft ground. Peg Black drew No. 1 at the post, and losing he» position very early looked unlucky not to bring off a big coup. Statuary improved on his latest showings out. Just So did not run up to expectations. There was money for Roman Pearl, but she was never prominent. EGJIQNT cup .

EGMONT CUP, of COO sovs., second 90 sovs., and third 30 sovs. from the stake. One mile and a quarter. 1 H. Clelland’s ch. m. Bright Glow, by Day Comet—Red Dolly, Cyrs., 8.4 (A. E. Ellis) 1 3 R. J. Murphy’s b. g. Concentrate, 4yrs., 8.6 (B. H. Morris) 2 4 F. H. (Mosman's b. g. Merry Mint, syrs. 7.9 (L. J. Ellis) 3 Also started: 8 Star Stranger. 9.4 (R. Reed); 6 Paganelli, 8.12 (H. Goldfinch); 12 Star Area, 9.2 (R. McTavlsh); 2 Seatown, 8.2 (T. Green): 3 First Acre, 7.12 (J. Barry); 7 Yoma, 7.8 (W. Broughton); 10 Spearmlss 7.5 (E. Burgess); 11 Hipo, 7.2 (W. H. Jones); 9 Le Choucas, 7.0, car. 7.1 (C. Davis). Won by a length and a head between second and third. Seatown was fourth. Time, 2min. Ojsec.

Bright Glow, favourite for the Cup, oe. cupied a handy position throughout and W At Star Area and Star Stranger "ot chopped out, First Acre, Concentrate* Pacanclli, Merry Mint and Bright <* lovsr beginning best. Paganelli led out of the straight, and being joined by Merry Mint, they led past the six furlongs and down the back from Bright Glow, Concentrate, First Acre, and Le Choucas, O n . W™ Pa"an6lli was tiring, Merry Mint leading IntS the straight from Bright Glow. Paganelli, First Acre, and Concentrate. Bright Glow came on and won by a length from Concentrate, who beat Merry Mint by a head. Seatown was fourth, followed by Spearmlss, First Acre, and Star Stranger. Bright Glow stripped looking well, and was always going like a^winner.• Concentrate was responsible for a useful race. He was sticking on as usual, but lie had no chance with the winner and only Just beaded off Merry Mint,, who ran well up to form. Seatown came from a good way back and ran a creditable race under the circumstances. Spearmlss, First Acre, an all ran well, ine st named finished with a solid run, and would have been much handler on a dry truck. The course scratchings were Rabbi 11 a.m.), and The Hawk (12.4 a p.m.). | FLYING HANDICAP. The hot favourite, Lady Quex, was well beaten in the Flying Handicap, victory resting with an outsider in Knightllkv., At the start Knightlike S°t caught in the tapes and lost some ground, Cimabue, Gold Dawn, Goshawk, and Llanore showing out first. Lady Quex ran up out of the back the order round the turn being Gold Dawn from Lady Quex, Cimabue, Llanore, Goshawk, Knightlike, and Havering. Enightlike and Cimabue moved forward entering the straight, the latter being out wide, but he headed off Gold Dawn with a furlong to go. Cimabue then challenged, but Knightlike beat him by a short neck. Gold Dawn was a length away, then came Goshawk. followed by Llanore, ,Lady Quex, and Havering. The winner’s performance was good, for he had bad luck at the start, and In addition his saddle slipped in the straight. Cimabue was finishing well and ran a good race. He may go to Auckland with Coneentrate. Gold Dawn ran a good race, but had every chance. Goshawk’ran well and should soon do better. Lady Quex and Havering ran poorly in view of .he Railway Handicap, but this Is not their right form. NOLAN CUP. The Auckland hack Pompeius made no race of the Nolan Gold Cup from the turn home. , , , . The Make Up-Imateaglrl bracket was favourite, and the late run on Dolomite into second favourite showed that he was well fancied. Marlca, Juggle, Whisogne, Make Up, Dolomite, and Austerity comprised the leaders out of the straight. Down T;he back Marlea and Whisogne led from Austerity, Juggle, Make Up, Chopin, Dolomite, and Latakia. Chopin moved.up third a little later, but Pompeius went forward very fast past the half and was clear on the turn from Whisogne, Marica (going back), Chopin, Make Up, Imateagirl, Latakia, and Skyrider. Pompeius turned for home clear of Chopin and beat him very comfortably by two good lengths. Make Up stuck on for third money four lengths back, with Democratic fourth, .followed by Juggle, Skyrider,-and Latakia. Nothing had any chance with, the winner. Chopin ran his usual solid honest race, and was unlucky to run up against Pompeius. Imateagirl was no good In the ground. Dolomite and Austerity were possibly unlucky in the running. WHAREROA HANDICAP. Mlthra, who started a hot favourite in the open high weight, was beaten before reaching the straight after being out in front in the running. Manly and Mlthra were the leaders from Macroom, Orazoue, and Rory Mor, there being no change to the half, where Hying Shot moved up fast. Flying Shot continued his run and led into the straight with Macroom, Manly, and Mlthra, with Rory Mor and Orazone handy. Orazone came on and won by two lengths from Rory Mor, who beat Wenday by a head. Flying Shot was fourth, followed by Opa, Mint Leaf, Macroom, and Mithra In n bunch. Orazone scored very comfortably. Probably the going had something to do with tlie defeat of the favourites, as a drenching shower fell just prior to the start. Wenday looked a bit unlucky. WAIPAPA HANDICAP. With Make Up and Fernden out of the concluding event, backers went for Monoloff and Singer. The former could do no better than fourth, but the latter scored after being prominent throughout. From a straggling start, Tenacre, Calamine, Singer, Monoloff, Remora, and Marjoram were the most prominent to the straight. Here Singer and Calamine were doing best, the former winning by a short half-length, with Marjoram, Monoloff, and Fortallce well up. Calamine, Tenncre, and Corwen were next. Singer looked a good wager on Feildlng form, with Make Up and Fernden out of the rond. but he won with nothing ,to spare, Monolog looked a bit .nuluck% . _
