SUBSIDY ON PORK
FARMERS DISCUSS QUESTION SATISFIED WITH PRICES Dominion Special Service. Masterton, December IS. When discussing the question of the drooping of the Government subsidy on pork as from the end of November at their meeting to-day. members of (lie Wairarapa provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union expressed the opinion that so long as the price for pork did not fall below (id. per lb., no subsidy was required. When the matter came forward Mr. II Daysh said he thought that if the pork industry were fostered to a certain extent it would soon be able to carry on by itself. Mr E. L. Rayner observed that there seemed to be more complaints than anything else concerning the condition of pork when it arrived for sale on the Home markets. It was a question, he thought, as to whether it was worth while supportin • the industry by subsidy until the New Zealand farmer learned more about dealing with pork for export. Several members changed the trend_ of discussion when they quoted prices being obtained from freezing works for pork, 6Jd. per lb. being mentioned as. practically an average price in the Wairarapa, and the opinion was expressed that with such prices ruling no subsidy was required. A motion to that effect was carried.
