THE RACING WORLD

PRODICE WINS BIG RACE AT WAIPA ‘ AUCKLAND AND WAIRARAPA HANDICAPS PAQUITO GALLOPS WELL AT RICCARTON; NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Acceptances for the first day’s racing at the summer meeting ot the Manawatu Racing Club on December 26, 27 and 28, and final payments for the Palmerston North Stakes, will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for the first day of the Wairarapa Racing Club’s summer meeting on January 1 and 2 will close on Friday at 8 p.m. The telegraph office at Featherston closes at 5 p.m.

Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for all events at the Waipukurau Jockey Club’s Boxing Day meeting. including the Maiden Race, will close with the secretary, Mr. W. G. Nightingale, on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Acceptances for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting on December 26 and 27 will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

The Foxton Racing Club's annual meeting is to be held on January 15 and 16. A total of £2340 is offered in prize money for the two days, £3OO being attached to the Foxton Cup, and £250 to the President’s Handicap the second day. Nomina--tlons close with the secretary, Mr. J. Martin, at 9 p.m. next Saturday. Winners at the meeting do not incur a penalty Or rehandicap for Wellington. ■

At Takaninl on Thursday Eaglet beat In the Shade over a mile and a quarter in pleasing style. Mithra and Le Choucas went a nice seven furlongs, the advantage being with the former, who went away from her companion over thp last furlong. The Egmont Racing Club has every reason to feel satisfied with the list of ac ceptances received for the opening day of its summer meeting, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday. There was a feeling that the altered dates might affect the fields, but with fourteen in the Cup, including Star Stranger, Rabbi, Paganelli, Concentrate, Star Area, Seatown, Silvermine, and others, a really first-class contest is certain. In the Flying Handicap Clmabue, Lady Quex, Havering, and Gos-. hawk represent the top class. The Nolan Cup, as usual, has attracted a big field of hacks, and all round the club has done as well, if not better, than could have been expected on its original dates.

Historic has come along all right during the past few. days. On Saturday he galloped a mile on the tan with Panther, and had it on his companion. If Historic goes on all right, doubts about him running in the Auckland Cup sho.uld be dispelled.

Paqnito and Dunraven are due to pass through on Wednesday, en route to Ellerslie,

Great Star is reported to have made great progress during the last few days. He appears to have thrown off the effects of his recent attack of kidney trouble, and it is stated now that he is definitely booked for the Auckland meeting, where A. H. Eastwood will ride him in the sprint events. , x Was it • BaceT

A matter that appears to have escaped notice, but one which is rather important, is the handicaps for the Trial on the second day of the Te Kuiti meeting. The weights were started with Parfait Amour 8.12, whereas the rules of racing distinctly state that the top weight in any handicap fiat race, except in races for two-year-olds, shall not be less than 9 stone. - Naturally they were “in” on Parfait Amour very strongly, but he got beaten. This, however, does not alter the fact that the rules of racing were not observed by the handl : capper, who, above all persons, should be aware of his error. It is extremely doubtful if the race under notice was a race according to racing law. On Wanganui Tracks.

Some interesting work was done on the Wanganui track on Saturday morning, when the conditions were favourable. Paratoo and Arisus were given a.spin over half a mile. They hopped off together and Arisus, forcing the pace, was slightly ahead at the quarter-mlle, which occupied 24 l-ssec. The'son of Thespian was not ridden out, and the pair finished together in 50sec. Paratoo will be a runner in the Juvenile Handicap at/Hawera. Arisus will probably make his next appearance at the Marton meeting. Just an Idea and Fernden were companions In a five furlong flutter. They ran the first quarter-mile in 24 l-ssec., and finished up the journey in Imin. ssec., time which. Fernden could have improved upoh. The Redfern gelding was taken to Feilding for the second day, but got out of his box and galloped a mile or two on the asphalt before he was caught. He was sore afterwards, and, of course, did not start. He is still a bit tender on his feet, but should be all right for the Hawera meeting. Star Area appears to be improving every gallop. He covered a mile in Imin. 45 4-ssec. by himself, the last six furlongs In Imin. 19 2-5 sec. He should be a winner at the holiday meetings, if not before. He is to race at Hawera. Whenuatonga will be a starter at Marton, all going well. He put in a useful gallop. A Good Gallop.

The event of the morning at Hawera on Thursday was the gallop of the two Cup candidates, Bright Glow and Silvermine, who were dispatched from the mile post on even terms and quickly got going to run the first three furlongs in 38, the halfmile in 50J, the six furlongs in 1.16, and finishing up the mile in 1.42, with the pair. on even terms. This was the best gallop, over the distance that has been put up this season. It was Sllvermine’s first effort over the journey, and must be considered very satisfactory. Both carried light weights. , \

NOTES FROM RICCARTON

ATTRACTIVE GALLOPING 1 BYPAQUITO ‘ Dominion Special . Service. Christchurch, December 14. The most interesting portion of the training operations at lilccarton on Saturday was a gallop over a mile and'a quar ter on the inside of the trial grass, in which the two Auckland Cup candidates. Count Cavour and Paqulto figured. They were together throughout the greater part of the journey, but the former held an advantage entering upon the last furlong. Paqulto was then, kicked up to his work, and finishing on strongly was on terms with his rival as.the line was crossed, the time for the full distance being 2mln. 9 1-5 sec. The Viscount joined in with the pair between the four and five furlong post and finished in behind them. The gallop was considered very satisfactory, especially in the case of Paqulto, who is most likely to maintain his position as favourite for the Ellerslie race. He carried round about 7st. and Count Cavour’s weight was U. 7. The latter again pleased track-watchers, and when pulled up did not seem at all distressed. In fact he Is better now than for a long time and certainly more advanced than when lie went north to contest the Auckland Cup last year. The Viscount will not make the Ellerslie trip and Count Cavour will be accompanied by Amor, who has done well lately and ran five furlongs to-day in Imin. 4sec. Hoylake did not appear to be galloping very fast In his task over seven furlongs, but the time recorded was Imin. 31sec. T. Lloyd will be very disappointed if Hoylake- does not win an Important race on the Manawatu-Marton trip. Phastar galloped six furlongs attractively In company with Commenter in imin. 18see. Dunraven gave Coroner a star! from the half-mile post, but. drew up to him in the last, furlong mid the pair finished together in the good time of 48 4-osec. Dunraven's efforts at Ellerslie will probably be confined to the handicap events. Parysla and Tarquinius. both of whom are to race at Dunedin, strode over half a mile In otsec. Httrly Burly covered the same ground in 49 3-ssec.

Coupling beat Thurso over six furlungs, taking Imin. Msec. Audience ran half a mile comfortably in otsec. This mare has been unlucky in her recent race efforts, and should get some money on the West Coast circuit.

G. J. Pine’s team for the Manawatu and Wairarapa meetings were responsible for some smart work. Silver Coot reeled off four furlongs along the back in 49sec, and Noteworthy followed suit in 49 2-ssec. Don Jose attracted attention by galloping a mile in the fast time of linin. 40 2-ssec the first half being covered in 49 l-ssec. Paper Boy has not done as well as desired lately and will not be raced during the holidays Danthonla (L Tilson) gave a fast display in a round of the hurdles, easily beating his companion Bladon (R, jf e . Seveny). WAIPA MEETING PRODICE WINS THE CUP FLYING TO MERVETTE Dominion Special Service. Te 4wamutu, December 14. The most successful meeting in the history of the Waipa Racing Club was held to-day. Following a light drizzle last night, the day dawned overcast, gradually clearing, and the fixture was held in ideal weather. The course was in good order and there was splendid competition in all events. The attendance of the public was good and the totalisator handled £26,690, an increase of £3OOO over last year’s figure. Catonian and Wako King were better fancied than Archeen in the Pirongai Hurdles. Archeen led all the way from Taumai and Wako King 'and he won very easily. Archeen relished the change from the bad conditions at Taumarunui. Taumai made a good showing after a lengthy absence, but Catonian was very disappointing. The Lamb looked as if a race'would do him a Jot of.good. KIHIKIHI HANDICAP. Valuation was the favourite in a good betting race on the Kihikihi Handicap. Gemlight was first out, but Stormfiend soon headed him and led to the turn from Gemlight, Valuation, and Black Marie. Gemlight finished well to beat Storm Fiend decisively, with Ti Tree finishing fast a close third, and jfareoom fourth. The winner is on the upgrade. Ti Tree came from a good way back and is due soon. Valuation showed speed, but stopped quickly in the straight. The race should do him good. WAIPA PLATE. Tractor and Tenakohe were favourites in the Waipa Plate. Master Latour and Welcome Boy led all the way, the former winning a close race, with Biddy Comet right up third and Perennis next. It was a straggling race with a lot of “green” ones engaged, and the dividendpayers began well. TE AWAMUTU CUP. Prodice was a good favourite over Corinax in the Te Awamutu Cup. King Emerald and Marble King led early, but Transformer turned for home with Prodice and King Emerald handy, and in the run home Prodice beat Transformer by a neck, with Marble King and King Emerald next. The winner had a little in hand and made a splendid showing. Transformer ran his best race for a long time? but Corinax lost a good position in the middle stages and was hopelessly placed at the turn. He will do better over the longer journey on Boxing Day. Prodice’s victory gave F. Loombe his fourth Te Awamutu Cup success on end. PATERANGI HANDICAP. Hakanoa headed an even pool on the Paterangi Handicap. Quincoma tried to' win all the way, but Thurnus. and Hakanoa were up close at the turn and Hakanoa just beat Thurnus, with Quincoma and Glena Bay right up. Hakanoa is now racing very solidly. Thurnus ran well and Quincoma is coming back to form. ORAKAU HACK. Richfield saw a short price in the Orakati Hack and after Patere had led early he took charge.to stall off a good run by Prince of Orange and won by a length. Cruachan ran a good race to finish a close third, with Kaiwanga and Day Lass next. The' winner was impressive and the minor place-getters are due any time in moderate company. Kaiwanga is also showing signs of returning form. FLYING HANDICAP. Leitrim was another hot favourite ■in the flying. Handicap. He was always in front, with Awarere on his quarter at the turn and Mervette closing up. The latter finished fast on the rnils to beat the favourite decisively, with Awarere and The Begum next. Mervette paid a fine price, due to the fact that the apprentice, J. McLoughlin, who had not previously won a race, was on top. He rode her very well indeed. Leitrim just failed to see it out. OHAUPO HANDICAP. Lunette and Sir Russell were almost evenly backed in the Ohaupo Handicap. Sir Russell got to the front early and he stalled off a fine run by Lunette to win by a neck. Black Ma ire shaped fairly in getting third. Sir Russell is a quick, improved galloper. DETAILS OF THE RACING By Telegraph.—Press Association.
