RED CROSS SOCIETY

PRIZE-GIVING NIGHT ! The Concert Chamber was filled to its utmost capacity on Thursday night, ’when the annual presentation of awards by the Red Cross Society took place. The Hon. Dr. W. 11. Cooilins presided, and on the platform were the Mayoress (Mrs. G. A. Troup). Lady Luke, Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., Mr. J. J. Clark (chairman war-time executive), Sister Lewis, and Mr. Galloway, secretary. Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson expressed regret at not being able to attend, as they were inspecting the Junior Red Cross in Dunedin. Apologies were also received from the Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore), the Chief Justice (Hon. M. Myers), Miss Greig, and Dr. Patterson. Dr. Collins said the large number present was evidence of the work being done. He would like to see such a gathering in every large town of the Dominion. Mr. C. 11. Chapman, M.P., chairman ot the Peace-Time Committee, gave a brief account of the very important work being done by the Red Cross instructional classes. During the past year Sisters Lewis and Lees had given instruction to 1056 students. There were 54 countries connected with the great work, and Mr. Chapman hoped that all those taking lectures would go on until they qualified themselves to help, as some of the senors did, the nurses at the General Hospital. He thanked all those doctors and nurses who had given lectures, and examined candidates, and also all those who by their subscriptions and other help enabled the Red Cross to carry on its work. During the evening the following items were given by members of the Junior Red Cross: Pianoforte solo, Gwyneth Jones, home member; vocal solo, “I’ve Lost My Heart in Maoriland,” Naney Harker, Petone West Circle: Dickens dialogue in character, Ruth Pierard and lau Galloway, home members; dance, “A Dragon Fly,” Phyllis Oliver, Terrace Circle; part-song, “The Shepherd’s Song” (Godard), Aileen O’Neill, Kathleen Costello, Margaret Culshaw, Phyllis Gatrell, Dawn MeGonagle, Betty Waters, Sacred Heart College Circle; violin solo, “Ire Mazurka/’ Dawn MeGonagle, Sacred Heart College Circle; recitation, Geraldine Palmer. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., gave an address to the members of the Junior Red Cross. He said he considered them the most important feature of the evening’s gathering. There was a time when children were not considered. To-day children were considered so’ valuable that the State did' everything to protect them. The Red Cross had discovered their value and in the junior department sought to train them in health rules and not only to help themselves but to help others. Every boy and girl in the Junior Red Cross was one of eleven million all cultivating a spirit of friendship throughout the world and making an international chain of service. He congratulated them on their association with the society and honed their numbers would increase. The certificates won in the recent examinations were presented by the Mayoress, Mrs. G. A.
