LINER UNABLE TO GIVE

The liner France radioed that owing to heavy seas and headwinds she was unable to aid'the British cargo steamer Volumnia, and was proceeding to New York, leaving the sinking ship and crew in mid-ocean with two cargo boars standing by unable to help. 1-ie France’s brief message said that she re ceived the Volumnia’s SOS on Sunday, and went to her, but the sea was too rough for lifeboats. After a radio conference with the Volumnia and two unnamed cargo boats, it was decided that since the France carried mails and passengers she should proceed. The Volumnia left Wales for I hil.tdelphia and Boston on November io, but was disabled the same day, and put back to Falmouth, from which she departed on November 18. DOUBLE RESCUE A STIRRING STORY (Rec. December 10, 7 p.m.) Paris, December 9. A stirring story of a double rescue was told hy the officers of the French salvage tug Jroise, which put to sea ou December 5 in search of the steamer Helen, which was reported to be m distress south of Ushant. The Helen's hold was found to he full of water and engines out of commission. The Iroise passed a cable aboard, but it broke in the darkness while making for Brest. The Helen drifted rapidly towards the Armen Rocks and began to sink. The Iroise picked up the crew, with the exception of one officer. She had scarcely finished the rescue when she received an SOS from the Danish freighter Galdana, which she succeeded in bringing safely to port. The Iroise now has set out again in reply to signals from the British steamers Alba and Tynebridge, and the Italian vessel Senatore Dali. •
