The Lower Hutt Club will hold its first open evening meeting on the Recreation Ground to-night, commencing at 6.30 p.m. The following events , will form the programme:—loo, 220. BSO, one mile, 100 junior, 75 yards ladies, 100 ladies, half-mile cycle, two-niile cycle, javelin throw. A special bus will leave Lambton at 5.30 p.m., returning from the Recreation Ground after the sports. Racing cycles will be carried free on the special bus.

Olympic- Club Notes. At the first afternoon sports meeting conducted by the Petone A.A. officials at tlie Petone Oval last Saturday, the Olympic Club was represented by twenty runners, and cvclists. and on the whole their performances were up to a high standard. To win the 120 junior, 220yds; open, 440vds. open, 880yds. open, and the one mile open, in addition to securing second place in the 100yds. open, 440yds..open, one mile B grade cycle, and a third in the three-mile open cycle event 'was no meau performance on the part of the club’s athletes, and with more attention to training there is no doubt chat:.'further successes will be secured, even though the handicaps will naturally shorten? The four juniors, E. Somerville, G, Tutty, F. Ward, and H. Cederman,' who ran in the 120vds. junior event, showed that they are exceptionally fast for their'respective ages, as all three will be racing with the juniors throughout the next season. Somerville and Cederman both qualified for the 'final, which: was eventually won by Somerville, with Cederman bunched with tlie non-plaee-gettcrs. Whilst both these lads have quite a lot to learn as- regards carriage and body balance they, arc improving. F. Ward ran in the 300yds. junior event, but could not 'secure a place, although he was well up at the finish. Possessing a great stride for a lad, Ward will improve on these first two races before the season closes W. H. Clementson, W. Ogg, and D. McNieol contested the 100yds. open, and after winnin- his hea x Clementson finished second in "the final after a great run. McNieol did not impress in this event. Clementson made no mistake in winning both ais beat and the final of the furlong in good time off a middle mark. - With proper attention to a few of the fine points of sprinting this promising young athlete will go a long way In the game. The 440 yds. race looked easy for W. Ogg. but his club mate, D. McNieol, lasted surprisingly well enough to win with a bit to spare. Both ran good races, witli Ogg steadily regaining his best form. For his first season in the senior ranks McNieol shows great promise. • ? O. Campbell and C. Tutty: (started in the

880yds. event, the former retiring from the contest upon his finding it a hopeless task to catch the leaders. Tutty carried on with, his usual long-striding indifference, and withstood a strong challenge from Walker, to win narrowly but well. Although t’-is runner shows a preference for the nalf-mile, his best distance is perhaps the one mile, at which distance he finished third in the provincial championships last year. ■ ! / C. Campbell made no race of the one mile flat, although conceding fairly large starts to the other competitors. His flue efforts in withstanding two determined challenges from Sinclair reminded one of Campbell's brilliant form of a few seasons ago. For one who has remained in the game so long Campbell has been most eon sistent on the track for over ten years. G. Tutty, a younger brother to the halt and one mile runner, did not show up in his first race, but when this lad gets the coaching he requires there is no reason why he should not follow in his brother s footsteps and win. The cyclists have not quite struck their true form, although at every meeting they have shown better pace. E. Bellman. 1. Sutherland, D. Evans, R. Tasker, F. Blackett, G. Orr, G. Irvine and F. Hoare all rode fairly well, with P. Sutherland, D. Evans and R. Tasker showing the best form. - . P. Sutherland made a great race of tha one mile B grade final. After giving fairly stiff starts to the other finalists be was beaten by the barest of margins to finish a good second. D. Evans was close tip fourth after doing a fair amount of the It. Tasker, who rode so well in the Palmerston North-Wellington road race, se cured third place in the three miles event after a hard ride. A few more races on the track will make Tasker a superior performer over the longer distances. G. Orr rode well for a first effort and with more training will improve. It is the club’s intention to hold a Pursuit race on January 29. when the s sports meeting will take place. The riders will be Bellman. Evans, Sutherlan'l and Staveley, and the race will be over a distance of three laps. The result should be very open. The posters are out tor this meeting aad all atbMes arb Lavita, wi l filter on or before the closing date, January 21.
