The greatest problem confronting Byrd in his flight to the Pole was the surmounting of the almost unbroken rance of mountains which flank the Polar plateau. The successful, accomplishment of this task was undoubtedly the highlight of the flight. The picture shows Mount Thorvald Nilsen, one of the peaks of the great range; it is 15,000 feet above sea-level.
