POLICE RAID HOTEL
LIQUOR SOLD AFTER HOURS On a recent night the police paid a surprise visit to the, Royal Tiger Hotel, situated at the corner of Abel Smith Street and Taranaki Streets, and found five men on the premises. The sequel was heard in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr. E. Page. S.M., when George Coulson, George Herbert Harcourt, Thomas Martin, Richard Murphy and John Louden were convicted on a charge of being unlawfully found on the premises after hours. All the defendants, with the exception of Coulson, were fined £2 each and costs. Coulson was fined £1 and costs. • John Scriven, the licensee of the hotel, who admitted selling liquor after hours, was fined £5 and costs. . Senior-Sergeant Ward said that when the police visited the hotel there were five men in a room adjoining the storeroom. Three of the men had glasses containing liquor, while the other two had glasses which had contained liquor. The : licensee, who was quite frank about the matter, stated he had served the men . with drink. He did not wish to lie about it. He had taken a gamble in taking the risk and had been caught. The senior-serge’ant stated that the hotel in the past had been well-conducted by the licensee and had given no trouble.
