SMALL SCORE

ENGLISHMEN AT BRISBANE QUEENSLAND IN LEAD ■ SPLENDID BATTING YB LEVY (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Bee. November 29, 9.55 p.m.) Brisbane, November 19. In the match against Queensland, England won the toss and batted first. The attendance was 5000. The weather, was fine and hot ( Gilligan and Duleepsinhji delighted the crowd. Duleepsinhji was particularly attractive with all-round play, on-side hooking being a feature. He batted sixty-one minutes and hit nine 4’s. Gilligan hit six 4’s. Ducat, the English coach in Queensland, impressed, but the others went easily before the -attack of Oxenham and Hurwood. Oxenham, who is a Test tour “certainty,” secured three leg decisions, two in succession. Barratt aroused enthusiasm by lifting Oxenham for six. The last nine wickets yielded only 40. O’Connor kept wickets well. The fielding generally was fair. O’Connor and Levy opened the Queensland innings. The captain was bowled in Nichols’s first over. There was no tea adjournment, the English innings having closed between 3 and 4 o’clock for 171. Levy and Gough were associated in a partnership of 138, which was broken when Levy , was caught in the slips. Levy gave an exhilarating display, securing most of his runs with well-placed shots behind the wicket. He hit thirteen 4’s and batted eighty-five minutes. Gough batted solidly and hit six 4’s. The fielding was lax. The English total was passed in 118 minutes. The fast bowling of Nichols was most troublesome. Oxenham lost his wicket after a sound display. The following are the scores:—
