“FREETHEY’S ISLAND”

Sir, —Your correspondent of Saturday. November 16, asks if Gear Island was originally called Freethey’s Island. Freetbv Island is in the centre, of the Hutt Park, and the high portion was levelled by the Wellington Racing Club. It was an island prior to the earthquake in 1854, when the 'quake raised the land several feet (about eight). Gear Island was at that time two islands separated by a stream running from north to south, then known as Baron’s Island, owned by Baron Alldersdoff, who was killed in Wellington by the earthquake of 1854. The writers father settled in that part in 1840.—1 am, etc., , WILLIAM COOK. Palmerston North, November 18.
