COAL CRISIS
BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S POLICY REFUSAL TO CO-OPERATE COMPROMISE POSSIBLE (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. November 22, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, November 21. The long-debated issue between the Government and the Miners’ Federation was finally cleared up yesterday, when, as was anticipated, the National Delegate Conference of Miners accepted the Government’s proposals. Only two districts voting against this policy. The text of the first of the Government Bills for dealing with the coal situation, comprising the proposals for the setting up of a wages board and dealing with hours and marketing schemes, will be issued next week. So far the mine owners, despite the advocacy of the Government’s policy by the Yorkshire group, have refused co-operation, but “The Times” says the opinion is current on the political side of the miners’ organisation that a compromise may yet be reached. It is suggested that if the coal miners were prepared to enter a joint conference there might be no need for the setting up of a National Wages Board, or that at any rate the proposal might be modified so as to met with their acceptance and remove the necessity for imposing it upon them. NO DEVELOPMENTS IN AUSTRALIA MEN PREPARED TO SIGN AT ROTHBURY MINE (Rec. November 22, 9.40 p.m.) (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Sydney, November 22. There Is no development in the coal dispute. All the parties are hoping for the best from the week-end conference. It is reported that a number of additional men are prepared to sign on at Rothbury colliery.
