WELLINGTON GIRLS" COLLEGE. PARENTS’ DAY.

The annual display of work and sale of goods at the Wellington Girls college took place yesterday afternoon ana evening and was largely attended, inc weather was perfect, and the grounds looked their best, although on such occasions as this their inadequacy as to space was very evident. The guests were received by the principal (Miss Greig). A display of drill and games was given under the direction of Mrs. Taylor. The display of work was most comprehensive, most interest centring in the cookery room, where the girls had some delicious cakes, pies and cold savouries for sale. Not only goods for sale were displayed, however, the work of the domestic science classes being displayed by the showing of meals for everyone from the baby of nine months to the adult, and not only age but season of the year, and occupation 'were considered. Some of the girls were preparing meals, showing the actual work done in the classes.'The finished products were most appetising. Upstairs sewing was displayed, and numbers of babies’ frocks (this having been the task of the third form) were to be seen, and the more advanced pupils showed frocks and some very tine embroidery. Some of the budgets, prepared by the girls for matriculation were on view, and showed design, colour and material in whole outfit. In one case a girl had drawn her own designs so well that one visioned a career as a fashion designer for her. The science rooms were open and experiments of all kinds were going on. Downstairs the work of the commercial classes was on view, girls seeming to be thoroughly prepared for clerical .work, and upstairs again the drawing was shown, and some pretty illustrations and poster designs. The Red Cross portfolio, which has again been prepared by the girls, was to be seen. This has won the prize for the best portfolio among secondary schools and is a very fine production, showing some beautiful photographs of New Zealand scenes. In the ball and class rooms, stalls for flowers, produce, soft drinks, and ices were conducted by the teachers and pupils, and one class had a second-hand bookstall, the proceeds going to the school funds. The old girls also conducted a sweet stall for the funds, and the Parents’ Association was in charge of afternoon tea, this being one of their efforts towards the school grounds improvements. After the display of drill, which was held in the grounds, the prizes won earlier in the year at the annual sports and swimming races were presented by Miss McLean. C.8.E., former principal of the college. Among these was the Maxwell trophy won in competition with other secondary schools. Later, a display of Red Cross work was given by the team which won the silver cup presented by Lady Luke for competition between secondary schools. There was a musical programme given by members of the school choirs. Several choirs have been formed among the girls, some trained by their teachers, and some conducted entirely by the girls, and these recently had a competition and showed prowess in singitig. Among the many visitors yesterday afternoon were the Mayor and Mayoress and Lady Luke,
