MAGISTRATE’S COURT
BY-LAW CASES. Mastertoil. November 22. By-law, cases were dealt with by Mr. J. Miller. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. G. M. Morgan pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a car in a manner that might have been dangerous to the public. Addressing the Bench, he stated that his reason for such a plea was that at the time the offence was alleged to have taken place he had had a governor on his car. and could not do a greater speed than 30 miles per hour. The car was also fitted with hydraulic brakes, and in the circumstances he considered such a speed was not dangerous. As defendant had been driving across an intersection, however, the Magistrate held that the speed was excessive, and defendant was fined £2 and costs 10/-. There were again several offenders charged with encumbering Club Street byleaving their cars unattended there. Fines of 10/-. with costs 10/-. were imposed on H. D. Boddington, Clarence Webb. Lawrence Sutton, and Edward Colechia. For cutting a corner Anne Madden was fined £2 and costs 10/-. Riding bicycles on the footpath cost A. S. Carter and W. D. Bauckham fines of 10/- each, with costs 10/-. while for a similar offence Gordon Longworth was ordered to pay costs only, 10/-. Charges of operating motor vehicles not equipped with correct number plates were preferred against James A. Gallagher and David Collinson, the former of whom was fined £l. with costs 10/-, and the latter 10/-. with costs 10/-. IT. W. Clarke pleaded guilty to a charge of keepin-’- his shop open on a Sunday for the purpose of transacting business, and was fined £l. with costs 10/-.
