The cricket representative team to play Rangitikei here on Saturday (a trial match to select a side to meet the Englishmen at Marton in .January) is as follows:—T. C. Lowry (captain), Chrystall, Hodder. R. Lowrv, Glennie, Hawk, Kelly-Smith, Marsh, Fleet,'" Dripps, Gressbn; emergencies, Graham, Parkes, Dr. Sinclair, and Treadwell. In a match for the Wakeman Cup played recently on the loeal bowling green, the holders, Lavin, Halpin. Hartley, Clerry (s.), successfully withstood a challenge from Mair, Johnson, Mortland, McLennan (s.). bv 18 points to 15. The by-election to fill the vacant seat, on the Borough Council due to the resignation of Councillor IT. Dashwood, was held on Wednesday, and resulted In the return of Mr. G. F. Kelly with 114 votes. The other candidates were: Messrs. R. Howden (SI votes), and W. R. Timbs (50 votes). Only a tenth of those on the roll voted.

A very successful social evening was held on Thursday, under the auspices of the local Chamber of Commerce. The gathering was presided over by the president (Mr. 11. M. MacCallum), and included among the guests were the Hon. W. A. Veitch, Mr. J. T. Hogan, M.P., Mr. W. Dalrymple (chairman of the Rangitikei County'Council), and Mr. J. P. Aldridge (Mayor of Taihape). Among those who rendered items were Messrs. L. de Lautour, L. B. Smith (Raetihi), W. If. Maclean, F. Glcdhill, J. E. Hamill, and I. It. Parkes (accompanist).

On Thursday afternoon a cricket match between Colts and Taihape was concluded, the former obtaining a win on the first innings. Colts made 149 (Fleet 65) ad 126 runs (Lelievre 29, McClure 31), as against 105 (Glennie 21) and nine wickets for 150 runs (Graham 38, Finlayson 27 not out) by Taihape. Mr. W. G. Nairn, of the local staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to Thames.
