MIGRANT IMPRISONED
TWO DAYS IN COUNTRY. Palmerston North, November 25. To be introduced to a New Zealand “lock-up” two days after he set foot in the Dominion, was the experience of James Higgens, a labourer, aged 47, who was found sleeping under a hedge in town last night. Higgens appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court this morning to answer a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, with no lawful visible means of support. Accused, who pleaded guilty, explained that he had arrived in the Dominion from England on Tuesday. He had intended going to Australia, but had landed in Wellington. He had come from Wellington on Tuesday, and had spent the night under a hedge. His Worship gave accused a chance to find work, convicting him and ordering him to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
