Dear Boys and Girls, — How often have you. longed for a magic wand or a wishing cap, or even an invisible cloak like the one that belonged to our friend, Jack the Giantkiller? Many are the times I have, But J think at examination time, better than all those things would be a whispering pencil. Have you never heard of one?. You would just say, “Pencil, would you please tell . . . and straight away the pencil would' tell, then you’d be able. write and say, "Kiwi, L came top of the class!" But by this time, those horrid lists .of questions will be put away—unless you are still dreatfling about them! . . - Were* they very puzzling? Not as dreadful as the one asked by the Sphinx, lam sure. He was a strange monster who crouched on a hill above the city of Thebes in Greece. He waited there to devour men who passed by, if they couldn’t answer this question, “What is it that has four feet in the morning, two at noon, and three at night?" Could you have answered it?... I should have been devoured, there and then. After a long time there came a man who gave the answer. This is what lie said, “Man; as a baby he creeps on hands and knees, in mid-life he walks on two feet, and in old age totters along with a cane, his third leg." That happened years and years ago, and was the. very first riddle. Aren’t you glad that you don’t have to answer questions like that, and to knozu that however many mistakes you make, your teacher could never devour you, although he might look as. though he were thinking about it? We are at the very best part of the riddle now; the part with two feet, and we are thinking about Christmas and all the other Christmases that will pass before we have three. I hope they will be many, don’t you?—KHYJ.
