FISHING AT TAUPO
SOME GOOD CATCHES OF TROUT Mr. Frank Dyer, who has just returned from a trip to Taupo, expressed the opinion yesterday that the rainbow trout there are not quite so forward in condition as they were at this time last year. This, he things, is in great measure due to the fact that the tish spawned late and have not bud sufficient time to get back into condition. Mr. Dyer was informed by one of the rangers that fish are still spawning in the hatchery stream. Nevertheless,, some good catches were oln tained, and some of the fish were in quite good condition. The best fish Mr. Dyer heard of being caught was SJlb. and he himself secured a 71b. jack fish in the pink of condition. A pleasing feature was the number of yearling fish obtained, which augurs well for good sport in future seasons. ‘Quite a number of new residences and business premises have been erected at Taupo during the winter, and there is an air of go-aheaduess that Mr. Dyer has not observed at Taupo for some years past. An English lady has erected a very fine two-storied house on the high land at the back of the town overlooking the lake, standing in about 10 acres of land, and at present has quite an army of men at work laying out gardens and plantations. Mr. Dyer understands that this lady is to visit Taupo during the present fishing season. The pumice roads round the Taupo and Ilotorua district, and also the road over the hills to Napier, are all in excellent condition. Graders are doing splendid work in all directions, and motorists contemplating touring these districts during the coming holiday will have little fear of being stuck up in bad weather, as was the case a few years ago.
Taupo is at present a yellow blaze of broom, said Mr. Dyer, which, though a noxious weed, looks magnificent and, combined with the native kowhai trees round the lake, makes a picture to be remembered.
