CITY COUNCIL

GENERAL BUSINESS. The City Council met last night.' The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) presided. Councillors W. H. Bennett, R.A. Wright, M.P., W. J. Gaudin, T. C. A. Hislop, F. Meadowcroft, T. Forsyth, H. A. Huggins, M. F. Luckie, B. G. H. Burn, G. Mitchell, R. McKeen, M.P., R. Semple, M.P., C. H. Chapman, M.P., and C. D. Morpeth also were present. Authority was granted for the paving of the portion of Waterloo Quay under the control of the council. It was decided that the offer of the Methodist Church trustees to erect a retaining wall, and dedicate to the council an area the corner of Northland and Randwick Roads, subject to the payment of £BB Bs., be accepted. Market Gardeners, Ltd., were granted application for the erection of a building in Wakefield Street, provided it has no doek entrances. The Education Board was granted permission to erect a temporary wooden building on the school site at the corner of Tory and Buckle Streets. On the recommendation ot the Reserves Committee it was decided: (1) That applications for permission to erect concrete boat-sheds on the foreshore .at Seatoun be approved on the usual conditions, and the boat-owners who are not prepared to erect suitable sheds be served with notices to remove the present unsightly buildings; (2) That an application for the lease ot an area at Duncan Terrace for the purpose of forming tennis courts be approved for a period of ten years free of rental, provided a public tennis club is formed and courts provided. At the end of ten years the courts and all improvements are to become the property of the council; (3) That the request of the Wellington Cricket Association for the scoring board at the Basin Reserve to be removed to the eastern side of the ground be ap--1 An application from the Labour Defence League for a permit to hold openair meetings was refused on, the recommendation of the By-laws Committee.
