A BOLD THEFT
WHAT A GIRL SAW ARREST IN HALF AN HOUR Dominion Special Service. > Auckland, October 1. A sensational robbery was carried out on the premises of the Arctic Fur Company, Upper Queen Street, at about 8 o'clock to-night. Furs valued at almost '£loo were removed. Two men were arrested half-an-hour later as a result of prompt action by a party of detectives. **
Shortly after 8 o’clock a young girl who was standing on the footpath saw two men approach the shop doorway. They apparently did not see her, because after hesitating a few moments, until, as they thought, there was no one about, they walked boldly up to the shop door. A second later there was a loud crash and the men disappeared inside. Realising that the men had broken into the shop the girl ran to her mother in a house nearby and the woman immediately telephoned to the police station. Returning to the road the girl saw the two men emerge from the shop a few minutes later and run down the street carrying two bulky packages. In the meantime the police were on their way to the scene. On reaching the shop it was found that the plateglass panel in the door had been smashed. The door was open, and, going inside, the detectives found the shop depleted of a great deal of stock. A thorough and quiet search of the neighbourhood was started at once. The search had extended to Waverley Street, which runs behind the shop, when two men were seen to leave a house. They were stopped and questioned. They were preparing to enter a taxi, and in their possession the detectives found a sugar sack stuffed full of furs and a large valise which had been left in the shop by the manager also full. As a result the two men were arrested. They stated they were seamen. One said he had been paid off a vessel that day,
