BRITAIN AND CANADA
CARRIED INTO SPORT CIRCLES
Sydney, August 30.
A new phase of the timber dispute is the boycotting by the Balmain Dinghy Club of a lighterage and ferry firm, Messrs. Nicholson Bros., who for many years have been liberal supporters of yachtsmen and have provided launches to follow races in case of accident. Not only is the firm black-listed, but a well-known boat and its crew have been disqualified because the skipper (Mr. Baulkwell) accepted “black” money in the shape of Mr. Nicholson s cheque for a prize which the club declined, but which Mr. Nicholson sent to Mr. Baulkwell privately. Messrs. Nicholson Bros.’ alleged offence is said to be the fact that their tugs and lighters have continued to work timber for certain big firms. It is reported that an effort is being made to get the Sydney Flying Squadron to withdraw business from another launch proprietor whose boats are understood to have carried loyalists to and from the yards.
