CAMBRIDGE SHOPS DAMAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Cambridge, August 5. In the early hours of yesterday morning a fire badly damaged two shops and a portion of a third in Victoria Street. The three shops were under the one roof of a wooden building which was one of the oldest in Cambridge. The fire had a good hold when dis* covered. It started in the shop occupied by W. Nan, a fruiterer and confectioner, and swept through the roof and back portions of the shops of W. M. Larkin (baker) and C. M. Crawford (outfitter). The two first-named shops, which were owned bv Mr. L. H. Nixon, of Cambridge, were badly damaged. The third, which was only partly burnt, was owned by Mrs. Roberts, of Auckland. The concrete and brick walls separating the adjoining premises prevented a more serious blaze. The insurances on Mr. Nixon’s shops were £6OO in the National Office. Mr. Larkin’s stock and fittings are insured for £2OO in the National office, and Mr. Nan’s for £l5O in the Commercial Union office. Mr. Crawford is also covered in the New Zealand Insurance- office. TOTALISATOR HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dargaville, August 5. Fire early on Sunday morning totally destro - the totalisator house of the Dargti.Je Racing Club at Awakino Point, together with a quantity of plant belonging to the club and a W”tity of household furniture owned by Mr. A. J Finch. The brigade turned out, but as the building is two miles from the town and out of the water supply area, nothing could be done, and the. fire made a clean sweep The insurance on the building and plant is £450. The amount on the stored furniture is- not known. The Racing Club will be a heavy loser. Ao one had been in the building for some weeks. ;
