Allison and Van Ryn beat Cochet and Borotra, 6—l, B—6, 6—4, in the doubles PLAY IN FINAL SINGLES Australian Press Association. Paris, July 28. Even though everyone realised that Cochet would again clinch France’s retention of the Davis Cup, it was a tense day, more so when the dashing, resourceful Tilden conquered the tired Borotra. After the first set Tilden began his head work with mighty slams which spoiled Borotra’s acrobatic volleying and made him run from side to side in pursuit of lightning drives. Tilden thus gradually wore down the Frenchman. Cochet’s win against Lott was child’s play. The champion had a sluggish spell in the second set, yet kept cool, as Lott was excellent in his drives and services, and sure on the back hand. Cochet played him like an angler and took eight successive games. Cochet returned seemingly unplayable shots and lobbed with great accuracy. His cross-court drives were disconcerting.
