OBITUARY

MR. J. M. GALLAWAY

Dominion Sitciai Service Dunedin, July 29. One of the best-known and most highlyrespected members of the legal profession in Dunedin died this afternoon in the person of Sir. J. M. Gallaway, at the age of 75 years. Born in Edinburgh, he came out to New Zealand at the age of 24, and in 1882, after hie admission to the Bar, he took tip a position as clerk in the office of the late J. B. Callan, and in the following year joined his employer in partnership. The firm of Messrs. Callan and Gallaway has been very wellknown for a great many years, and for a fairlv lengthy period it has been carried on by Hie sons of the original partners. Mr. Gallaway took a keen interest in educational matters, and served on both the Otago Education Board and the High Schools Board of Governors. He was for over 40 years a menjber of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, and he was an expresident of the Otago Rugby Football Union. In later years he was an enthusiastic bowler. Social service and friendly society work made a strong appeal to him, and as well as being a member of the Masonic Order he was one, of. the earliest members in Dunedin of the United Ancient Order of Druide. In 1884 he married a slaughter of the late George Turnbull, and he is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter. <
