EYESORES?
“POOR MAN’S ART GALLERY” Are hoardings eyesores? A lengthy discussion on the subject was heard last night when members of the Lower Hutt Borough Council considered three applications to erect advertising hoardings on the land facing the eastern approach to the new Hutt River Bridge. While some of the councillors were in favour of letting the site for this purpose, the Mayor (Sir Alexander Roberts) was strongly averse to the suggestion. In his opinion hoardings would be an eyesore to the borough. This objection was upheld by Councillor Mcßain, who thought that it would be better if the council would plant the site in shrubs and beautify it. Although he agreed with this suggestion, Councillor Patrick opposed it on the ground of expense. Councillor F. Campbell said that there were hoardings and hoardings, and added that some of them were a pleasure to look at. He mentioned several hitherto unsightly spots in Wellington which, by means of wellpainted advertisements, had been made, so he considered, really presentable. The Prince of Wales, continued Mr. Campbell, had described hoardings as “the poor man’s art g. Ilery,” and the art displayed on some of them really was pleasing to the eye. A scheme is to be put before the council for consideration at its next meeting.
