DROWNED WHILE AT WORK
ACCIDENT IN MANAWATU RIVER ? . (Palmerston North, July 22. The Manawitw River claimed another victim this afternoon, when Ronald Drummond, a married man with three children, residing at 2 College Terrace, lost hia life in its waters. Drupimond was employed at Child Bros.’ metal depot at Albert Street, and at about 12.30 to-day, accompanied by a mate, vv. H. Hosking, he crossed the nver in a boat, to adjust the sheave blocks of the wires controlling the grab that is used to extract shingle from the river bed. The •boat was half-way across’on the return trip, when Drummond seized one of the ropes which stretch from bank to bank, across the river, and capsized the boat. He turned and attempted to secure the boat, but he was washed downstream. Although he could swim, when he had been carried down for about 100 yards he disappeared from' sight, and was not seen again. , , A search has been made over a considerable area,, but'the body lias not been recover*?. Hosking held on to the ropc and. managed to teach shore.
