HUTT ROAD ACCIDENT

MOTORIST BEFORE THE COURT Nathaniel John Reid, a salesman, aged 40, was charged before Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, “that while in a state of intoxication he negligently drove a motorcar along the Hutt Rond, thereby causing bodily injury to Charles Edward Warr.” Sub-Inspector Lander in asking for a week’s remand said that Warr was in the hospital seriously injured, his leg being broken in three places. It was alleged by bystanders who saw the accused after the accident on the Hutt Road on Sunday evening that he was intoxicated, and this opinion was also shared by the police who were called and who arrested him. Apart from the fact that it was not possible for Warr to give evidence the case required investingating. Mr. W. E. Leicester, who was present on behalf of Warr, said that bis client had passed a favourable night in the hospital, but his future condition, for the present, was uncertain. “I desire to say," said Mr. P. Jackson, who appeared for Reid, “that the allegations that he was intoxicated are denied by the accused, who has told me that he did not have one drink all yesterday.” Reid was remanded for a week and was granted bail in the sum of £lOO or two sureties of £5O each.
