AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON Play in the Auckland-Wellington 20aside telegraphic match was concluded on Saturday evening, when only ten games were completed. Half an hour was wasted at the outset in exchanging sealed 1 moves, and then another half-hour was lost owing to a fault in the wire at the Auckland end. Progress was also hindered by an unusually, large number of clerical errors in both centres. The play in the games actually finished was as follows :— . Board 1: D. 1. Jones (A.) v. a. VV. - Gyles (W.) —By means of a spirited at- ■ tack Gyles gained a queen and bishop for 2 rooks. With this commanding advantage he forced a good win at move 39. Board 3: J. C. Grierson (A.) v. VV. E. Mason (VV.) —The latter, showing all his old-time brilliance, launched a dashing attack. The ensuing exchange..- left him a clear rook up. Mr Grierson resigning forthwith. Board 4: Belling ( VV.) v. C. C. Stevens (A.) —Stevens, with fine judgment, gave up in a minor piece to hurry his King’sside attack. He threatened a mate in three, and as it would have cost a rook and the exchange to stave off this ingenious threat. Belling resigned at move 36, his game being [hen quite hopeless An instructive ending. Board 5: J. Good (A.) v. W. Mackay (VV.) —A earefully-played bout, a draw being agreed to at move 38. Board 7: A. Fotheringham (A?) v. (i. Wigham (VV.)—The latter fought a plucky rearguard action, but could not regain the ground lost on the first evening. He resigned at move 32, the end being then in sight. Board 8: D. Purchas (W.) v. W. S. Ogle (A.) —Making the most of his attack, Ogle reached the end-game a knight up. Purchas resigned at move 30, when the end was only a matter of time. Board 11: Bev. Jeffreys (A.) v. J. Fairburn (VV > —The 'after, on resuming, won a pawn. Later on he was a clear piece up owing to his opponent inaccurately transmitting an intended move. This advantage enabled Fairburn to obtain his opponent’s resignation at move 24. Board 12: R. C. Sim (W.) v. G. E. Adams (A.) —Resuming with a 2-pawn advantage, the former forced the play in fine style, gaining two pieces. The Auckland hon. secretary resigned a hopeless struggle late in the evening. ’ Board 14: A. E. Jessup (VV.) v. A. E. Layland (A.)—Jessup, who was a pawn up, accepted a draw at 11 p.m. Board 16: F. Grady (VV.) v. G. H. Ed wards (A.)—After a number of exchanges Grady got in a powerful queen move that threatened to win a rook or mate in 3, and this immediately decided the issue in his favour. The game at board 9. between H. Lees (Auckland) and J. C. McCrea (Wellington) is being played over the board in Auckland. It was adjourned at 11 p.m in an even state, and is to be finished during the present week. The positions reached in the remaining 9 games are to be examined to-morrow (Tuesday) mor ning, by Messrs. VV. Mackay and A VV Gyles, to that offers regarding them may be made to the Auckland captain (Mr .1 C. Grierson). Any positions regarding which agreement cannot be reached by the two captains are to be sent to the ('hristcnji, I, members of the New Zea lai:? Adjudication Board for their decis ions. Of fl: 10 completed games the locai club has won 5, lost 3. and drawn 2 The present tally is therefor* ' Welling ton C.C. 6, Auckland C.C. 4. A cursory examination of the 9 unfinished gamethat are be'iig negotiated upon gives th impression that the Wellington C.( should be one, if not two, points up H ' he finish
