THE RACING WORLD

' NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "The Watcher.”)

A. Tinker stated at Trentham that Paddon would not be likely to go to Riccarton, but as his owner expressed an opinion that he might be there if the weight suited it was not. till acceptance time that it became definitely known that the Whyte Handicap winner would be an absentee. There is always the chance, of course, that Paddon has again gone wrong, but it is more likely that his connections are waiting for the spring before racing him again. His absence weakens the Winter Cup field.

There was a very solid weeding out of the Winter Cup field, but apart from 1 addon and Havering, there is nothing in the list of non-acceptors that mattered a great deal so far as good prospects were concornea.

Mangan! is the only one of tne twelve non-acceptors for the Grand Steeplechase whose form entitled him to consideration and the event still contains its best material. Brigadier Bill might nosslblv have been given a trial over Kiccarton country, but on his Wellington form he was not entitled to be considered a National prospect.

The moderates—and one might almost write the million-to-one chances—gave up the ghost in goodly numbers in the National Hurdles. Twenty-three dropped out and apart from Comical and Bright. Land nobody will regret their absence. The best of the entered material still remains in, a noticeable one being Perle de Leon.

Acceptances for the principal events at the Grand National meeting, together .with nominations for the minor events, leave no doubt that the winter carnival at Rlccarton next month will be a great-success. There are thirteen acceptors in the Grand National Steeplechase, thp same number as last year, twenty-seven ,in the Winter Cup, against thirty-four,. and eighteen in the Grand National Hurdles, against fourteen. As for the minor races, the nominations total 481, or two short of last year. Visiting horses figure .prominently in all the races, the North Island claiming a strong contingent, so. that wide interest will be created in the week’s sport.

Kawini, King's Guard, Roman Abbey and Uralla have had' their engagements continued in the Grand National jumping double. Among the other horses who were nominated for both races, Nukumai, Manganl and Horbmea have dropped out of tne steeplechase, but remain in the hurdle race, while Wiltshire and Radiate have had their steeplechase engagements continued, but they have retired from the hurdle race. Three of the acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase have other engagements on the same day. Lord Ranald has been nominated for the .Enfield Steeplechase, while Roman Abbey and Kawini are in the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap.

When Glendowio was sent south at the conclusion of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting he was placed in the care of tho Addington trotting trainer, W. J. Tomkinson, as his own trainer. A. Rhodes, had business which took him home for a few days. Glendowle has had an easy time since his arrival. Rhodes was expected at Riccarton yesterday, when Glendowio was to be shifted to Riccarton, and the northern jumper will attract a good deal of attention. His form this winter has been decidedly moderate, and he will need to make wonderful Improvement during the next few weeks to have any chance in his jumping engagements at the Grand National meeting. He showed up fairly well for about two miles in the July Steeplechase on the last day at Wellington, and then collapsed. Interest will centre round his track form when he reaches Riccarton. He is a good horse, at his best, but his chance of making .a come-back during the next few weeks does not look brigpt at present. • '

■As R. Reed has left for Australia, his riding in the Dominion this season has been concluded. He.finished up. with fifty - six wins, a record which places him on an equality at present with L. J< Ellis, who still has two South Canterbury meetings this'week. The Southland light-weight is not likely to lack riding engagements, but neither will his brother, A. E. Ellis, who Will commence the final stages of an Interesting struggle with a lead of four, his winning total now standing at sixty.

Mr. G. M. Currie is expected back from Australia by tho end ot the week, whei. a decision will be come to regarding sending his team across the Tasman. W. Rayner lias the horses all in good condition for this stage of their preparation, except Thaw, who has gone lame. Mask, Ceremony and the rising two-year-old Pomp arc doing particularly well, and it any o£ the team go the three named can be regarded as certain to make the trip. However, it is likely that the team will not be sent to Australia, but will remain here for the . Wanganui, Avondale and Auckland spring meetings.

On the first day of the V.R.C. winter meeting the Flaxmere-bred Horoscope opened his winning accou;it. as a hurdler by winping the Maiden. Hurdle Race, and on this second day ’ of .the meeting,. July 10, won the Keilor Hurdle Race, in which he beat a good field, including Adit, who at one time was a well-backed candidate for the Grand National Hurdle Race. Horoscope is by Absurd (imp.)—Lady Ball, so that he is a half-brother to Gay Ballerina.

The New Zealand-bred Waicußus 'ran second to Hitachi in the Iramoo Welter on the first day of the- V.R.C. Grand National meeting, bejng beaten by a short head. His conqueror was -ono of the outsiders of the field, and was quoted at very long odds. .

The New Zealand-bred Willow King by Greyspear—Lochiela, won the Novice Handicap at the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting on July 6.

Reremoana has been brought in by O. Cox frojn Kpi Iwi and is being exercised by his trainer.

J. Fryer is making preparations for his Sydney trip and if satisfactory arrangements can be made, will leave Ip about a fortnight’s time.

A South Island owner recently asked Mr. R. A. McKenzie, of Palmerston North, to put -a price on Rioghall, the two-year-old son of Grandcourt and Cleasanta (says an exchange). The quote, a thousand guineas, stopped further business in connection with the subject. In the Gaelic language Rioghall means Royal.

The Eclipse Stakes, run at Sandown Park on Friday, is one of the richest events of the English turf. The added money only amounts to JJIoOO, but the payments by owners in the shape of fortelts and sweepstakes serves to build up a big sum, and last year- the winner’s portion of the stakes amounted to £13,305. 1 airway, who-won the race last year under Lord Derby’s colours, was beaten into second place this year. He had. incurred a 101 b. penalty, which brought his weight to 910. All the placed horses were four-year-olds, a rather significant happening if there were any of the three-year-olds lu the field.

For several years the Wanganui Jockey Club has shown the effects of the purchase of the Westmere property in its balancesheet, for it has been deemed necessary to write off the property until to-day it stands at £15,700, whereas it cost oyer £28,000 (says the "Chronicle’). During the year _just closed it was considered that the property had been written down sufficiently to warrant the committee in handing on to owners in stakes the amount that would otherwise have been written off. Thus the stake money was increased from £11,850 to £12,985. Had it not been for this increase in stakes the club might have been able to show a profit of nearly £lOOO instead of the loss ot £132. The club is t.o*be congratulated on the result of the year’s working, and the fact that the corner appears to have been turned and hard times left behind.

The win of Oratrlx in the principal event at the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday indicates that the New Zealand mare is somewhere near her best form again, and from now on she will no doubt be in more demand for some of the big spring handicaps. H. B. Lorigan Is doing well with his team so far, for lloyal Duke was a winner the previous week, following upon good form in his earlier races. Lorient 11, who won the Welter Handicap, is Dr. W. C. King's English-bred horse from J. T. Jamieson's stable that was recently sent over to try his luck on the other side. FIXTURES. July 25—South Canterbury J.C. July 25—Waimate District Hunt Club. NOTES FROM RICCARTON USEFUL TRACK WORK Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, July 20. The weather conditions were very favourable for track work at Riccarton this morning. The No. 1 grass was open, and although on the slow side provided good going in spite of the recent wet weather. Fast times were out of the question. Useful work was done by a large number of horses, but there were no outstanding gallops. • \ 1 Battle Colours and Subdivision were sent over live furlongs, finishing together in Imln. 8 2-ssec. The latter has done well since coming to Riccarton and is due to race at next month’s meetings. Paquito was seen to advantage in a spin oxer three furlongs, taking fit) l-ssec. Limerick nd Arlkiwai strode over four furlongs in 52 2-ssec., the former moviug very attractively. Arlkiwai showed slight signs of soreness after the task, but not nearly as pronounced as on previous occasions. ■ „ . Chide and Starshooter were allotted strong work over six furlongs. Honour sprinted three furlongs along the straight. He is undoubtedly in splendid order at present. Quick Plunge and Sudden Storm ran three' furlongs in '4O 2-ssec. The former bears a healthy appearance, and should do well' at the smaller meetings in the new season. . Rapier had his stablemate Raplna, the unsuitably named daughter of Paladin and Pineta as a companion over five furlongs. The youngster showed the. possession of speed and finished slightly in front of Rapier, who was not allowed to do his best, in Imin. 7 3-ssec. Grand Song beat Zeuxis at the end of a similr journey in Irnip., 6sec.- The latter has made marked improvement since entering upon a course of schooling, and a stake should soon come his way. Marsham and'- Belcairo were restricted to a strong task over five furlongs. Elysianor beat Young Thurnham comfortably over six furlongs, occupying Imin. 27s ec. ■ Paikahu covered the. same ground in Imim 24 2-ssec. He has done all right since his last race, and wlll'be on hand in minor steeplechase events next mopth. Aberfeldy, who lightened up considerably as a result of his Wellington trip, galloped six furlongs in Imin. 23 2-ssec. Sweet Refrain beat Pngolin over five furlongs in. Imin. Osee.. Phastar and Comniputor went well over, six- , furlongs occupying Imin. 22 2-ssec.. and Haulage nnd Rascal registered a similar performance. Gala Day and Wrigley traversed seven furlongs in Imin. 37 3-ssec., finishing abreast. . . , - Gay Jim executed -useful work oyer five furlongs in Imin. llsec. Gav Sonnet pleased by her effort in covering six furlongs in Imin. 20sec.> Overdrawn and. Haze took Imin. -1 ~-o sec. for a similar gallop. There was little between Honeycomb and Huntlv at the conclusion of five furlongs, covered in Imin, 5 2-sscc. Royal Flower beat Prickles oyer- half a mile in 53 4-sse'c. This pair have made good progress since joining R. W. King’s stable, , Silver Paper and Aspiring were given a sprint over three furlongs, taking 41 3-o sec. Both are coming to hpnd satisfactorily. the former especially being well advanced. " ■ ■ , „ , Trollus and Fresh Breeze recorded imin. 23 l-ssec> for. six furlri»i.s. The latter is a rising seven-year-old ireldlng by Boniform from Sailor’s Hop®. blit does not look a likely winner at the forthcoming meetMoney was allotted a sprint over four, furlongs, executed in 55sec. She lias grown into a big filly and should figure as a'high-class three-year-old. Morian and Ripdale ran half a mile in (G. Salt) jumped two hurdles, but did not give a good display. Radiac (L. Tilson) and Lord Ranald (W. Scobie) negotiated eight steeplechase fences. Both jumped very well, but the latter always hold his companion safe in the matter of pace. A change of;plans has been made in regard to Lord Ranald, s it is now intended to start him in the Grand National Steeplechase, in which he will lie ridden by Scobie. Hyperion (I. Tilson). Master Garland (W. Scobie) and Sea Boy (G. Salt) were sent-off together for a round of the country, but Master Garland took-, off too far at the .first fence and crashed. Hyperion completed the task in a moderate manner, but Sea Bov, who is only a hunter, ran off at the second of the double. Glendowlf, who has been ip W. J. Tomklnson’s stable for the Vtist week, is tq be moved to Riccarton tb-morroW and will be in charge of his own trainer, A. Rhodes, from now onwards. Glendowle has been physicked since coming 'south and when, seen to-day he certainly did not look like a Grand National proposition.

The fiftieth annual report of the Fellding Jockey Club states that practically all sources of revenue with the exception of acceptance fees show an Increase over last year, and after allowing for depreciation to the extent of £1124 4s. 3d., the sum of £7o2'9s. 7d. has been added to the capital account.
