MINIATURE RIFLES

A AND C GRADE RESULTS

NOTES ON SHOOTING

“Aperture.”)

(By

' lie fourth round of “A” grade miniature rl.uS matches was fired last week, and excellent scores were made. The average of 67.18 by the 69 members competing was much greater than the previous two matches. The Hutt team eclipsed the Public Service record With a score of 4bl, nine points below the possible. This re cord-breaking club lias for the last tb rL e years' registered the highest score In . a match, and on most occasions has topped the poll, as far as aggregate points are concerned, in all the Inter-club rounds of matches. In 1926 the record team score bv the Hutt team was 480, and .in 19-j, and on this occasion, 4SI. Possibles, were obtained by P. B. Goldfinch (Hutt). L. Hare (Hutt), W. Swift. (Harbour Board), D Robertson (Harbour Board). S. Gibson the fifth round, of “C” grade matches was disappointing, the shooting being brilliant in patches and mediocre all round. The average for t he 82 competitors was 62.57, which, though an improvement over three _previous rounds, is still somewhat on the low side. Compensation is richly con^ 1 k“ te 4 < l f , by p -® h e teams aggregating more than each. Hutt equalled its previous record with 408 but the laurels and congratulations go to the Wellington Working Men s Club with the record total of 461, or an average of 65.85 points. Records of; previous years are not immediately available, but it Is doubtful whether-this record has hitherto been excelled by a "C” grade team. Several fine individual scores were compiled, the highest being made by Miss F. O. Cave (Public Service). J. Devine (Petone Central), Fletcher (Public Service), Johnstone (Hutt), F. Knight (Petone Working lien s Club), F, Thorpe (Petone Central), all with 68 each. . „ The results are as follow. —

Karori Club. The usual weekly spoon competitiona; of* the Karori Club were continued on J uesday night last week, and were P™ducthe of some excellent scores, W’hllst in the case of the B grade shots there was an exciting finish. In this section, Mrs. McNab, Mrs. Staples, and H. P. Dore each scored 67 off the gun, and thus tied for the spoon. As a shoot-off was necessary,, the three competitors .went down on the mound together to fire the three fateful Slots which would determine the winner Mrs. Staples and Dore again scored three bulls, and Mrs. McNab withr two Miners and a bull, dropped out. Shot for shot was now the order. Mrs. Staples scored a bull, and Dore replied likewise. Mrs. Staples then scored a nine. Dore following suit. With his next shot Dore again found the bull, and as Mrs. Staples could onlv register a nine. Dore won one of the best-contested competitions yet held for H Th?°A- grade spoon was won by H. T. Tbere was keen competition amongst the members of the Wellington Working Men’s Club during the progress of the shoot for the president’s (Mr. H. B. Swain’s) trophy. C. Tlie highest aggregate, gun score was made by D. Alabaster with a total of 201. In view of the greatly Improved all-round standard of marksmanship, the handicapper will be faced with no easy task. Possible honours go to the credit’of W. Cherry. 11. Shanks. W. Smith and G. Walker. The vice-president’s (Mr. E. Short’s) trophy is now being competed for. ~ G. Symonds and W.. Smith have each attained the possible total with several others still in the running. General Notes.

Notice has been sent to all clubs calling a special general meeting of the association on Friday. June 28'. at 7.45 p.m. at the Wellington Miniaturb Rifle Association range. Winter Show Building, John Street. As the' business concerns all members it Is hoped that there , will be a good representation from each club. A short meeting of the executive will follow that of the general meeting. It is officially announced that the Sydney Tisdall Cup competition was won by Sydenham with an aggregate score of 9<B (possible 1000). Hutt was runner-up with 076. More detailed, results will follow. “Aperture” appreciates the efforts several of the clubs have made to furnish him with notes regularly. On the other hand the reluctance of other dubs to furnish interesting items of news tor publication is to be regretted. It is suggested that the leading scores of each, round of competition series, the leading’aggregates during the progress of the competitions, the leadine aggregates in the championship series'and the results of each competition series may perhaps prove convenient and readily ascertainable for the basis of notes.
