LYALL BAY SCHOOL

ANNUAL MEETING OF HOME ASSOCIATION. The first annual meeting of the Lyall Bay Home arid School Association was held last night, the president, Mrs. H. Q. Bruce, presiding. “The school needs many- things that the school committee cannot provide,” stated the annual report, “but the association will quickly note the requirements, and if possible, see that they are supplied. An organised Home and School Association can bring about big improvements, and thus inspire staff and children to better work. The first objective of the committee was to provide a new piano for the infants’ school. Monthly card parties'were held, and also a very successful children’s plain and fancy dress party. The objective was finally reached with a picture entertainment arranged through the good offices of Mr. D. Richards, the then proprietor of the Lyall Bay Theatre, and a piano was purchased and duly presented to the school. A duplicator and gramophone were later presented to the main school. “The second- objective of the association was to raise £2OO for the playground improvements, and it was decided to hold a grand bazaar and sale of work. All the stalls were well stocked, and the ladies’ committee had' worked strenuously and ungrudgingly for some weeks to assure the success of the function. With the proceeds of the bazaar and the addition of moneys received from other activities, the executive was able to hand over the sum of £5O to the school committee, who, with the amount it already had in hand, decided to proceed with a.portion of its original programme at the northern end of the playground.” The president said she thought the progress had been very favourable considering it was (he association’s first year. The headmaster of the school (Mr. A. O. Banner) and the chairman of the school committee (Mr. H. M. Harris) thanked the association for its assistance and co-operation on behalf of the staff and committee respectively. The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs. H. Q. Bruce; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. F. W. Boyd and S. L. Hall; secretary, Mr. B. C. Cull; assistant secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. W. Olsen; executive, Mesdames F. W. Boyd, B. C. Cull, E. Gambrill, E. B. Topp, S. L. Hall, D. W. Olsen, A. Sowman, and W. F. Sherwood, and Messrs. H. Q. Bruca, H. M. Harris, and D. W s Olsen.
