SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY
HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES. There have been large gatherings of men In the Sailors’ Friend Society’s Church and Institute during the current week. On Sunday morning the mlssloner spoke to men on ‘‘Friend or Foe.” Mrs. Pullyn was Instrumentalist. In the afternoon 90 men sat down to tea. Mrs. McComish and Miss McComish were the hostesses. There, was a grand attendance of men in the church at 7 p.m., when the mlssloner spoke on ‘‘Strong Men.” The soloists were Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. W. Britton. Mr. H. G. Good was the organist. There was a full attendance at the songservice. when the men Indulged to the full In hymns they know so well. Mrs. Good and Messrs. Berry and Weston were the Instrumentalists, an'd Mesdames Jackson and Britton again sang to the men. On the King’s Birthday the condition of the sports ground prevented the men from going to the country, but in the spacious institute of the society a most happy day was passed by a big muster of men. The games, under the leadership of Mr. J. Moore, mlssloner, went with a wonderful swing. • The helpers lent valuable and readv aid. The tug-of-war event versus the Port Auckland and .all-comers, was won by the Port Auckland. Lunch, tea and supper were served by a band of workers under the leadership of Mrs. J. Moore. Boars of laughter greeted famous “Buckjumper Billy?’ Cheers for our King were given by the seamen present as the guns boomed out. The prizewinners in the 'day’s events were Messrs. Gowen, Hall, Greener. Stevenson,' Lake, Meech. Brindley. Black, Barnes, Baker, Hall, Woodward, Crumllsh, Pellent, and Nelson Black, Brindley, Russell, Vickers and Hall. The happy day was closed with votes of thanks to all who had arranged such a winsome season for men away from home. The Doxology and "Auld Lang Syne” was the final.
