CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON HOME SIDE WINS BY ONE GOAL In splendid weather and under good conditions the Wellington and Canterbury representative match was played at the Basin Reserve yesterday before a crowd of about 4000. The A. and B. representative teams played in the morning, the A representatives winning a moderate game by 6 goals to 2. . The curtain-raiser was played between Wellington and Canterbury fourth grade representatives, the Wellington boys being too clever for the visitors, who were defeated by seven goals to nil.

SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES

The senior representative teams were 85 Canterbury: Colville; ;Johnstone and Muscroft; Walker, Roberts and McLeod; Allen, Sutherland, Frickleton, Cullen and Nelson. „ , . „ Wellington: Lucas; Steel and Guest; White, Campbell and McCormack; Barton, Rigby, Leslie, Wilson and Cullen.' Referee: Mr. S. Wilson. Canterbury kicked off and got off the mark well, Allen just failing to hold the ball in play. Steel beat Nelson and White, sent Barton and Rigby away, Johnstone relieving. Rigby tried a shot after heading the ball, but sent behind. Canterbury played the left wing strongly, Nelson being a speedy winger, but tlie defence was good. Barton touched to Rigby, who crossed right over, and Cullen (Wellington) just cleared the crossbar with a good attempt. The Canterbury forwards combined in a run down, and the position was critical when Lucas punched the ball practically off Cullens (Canterbury) head. A sharp assault then took place on the Canterbury goal, Wilson testing Colville, who caught the ball, but Rigby rushed up and carried the ball out of his bands into the net. Wellington 1, Canterbury 0. There were some good exchanges between the Wellington left wing and the Canterbury defence, McLeod clearing finally. The visitors were making the pace a good one, and a pretty shot' from Nelson saw Lucas first away. Guest then headed behind off Nelson. A Pretty Goal. It was a brillianUpiece of work which led to Wellington's second goal. Campbell shot, and the ball came back to him, he flashed it to Barton, who drove between the two backs, and Rigby, duckin’ low, got his head to the ball and screwed it into the net just inside the post. A roar of applause greeted a fine piece of work. Wellington 2, Cantera minute from the kick-off, Bigby, who was right on his game, sent the ball skimming the bar at 30 yards, a great try. Canterbury then went through midfield, and Frickleton got the ball full in the face from a hard clearance by Guest. Cullen (Wellington) received from McCormack, and made a good run, Wilson sending behind. Sutherland, the Canterbury inside left, showed a tendency to fall over the ball when on the run. Canterbury came back again, and Roberts let drive, the ball hitting Frickleton, who caught the ball and drove straight at Lucas. The latter caught the ball but lost his hold, and it went into the net. Wellington 2, Canterbury 1. A good bout took place in the Wellington' half, some good efforts being made to penetrate. The backs held well till a sharp return came from Roberts, and Frickleton smashed the ball in without giving Lucasa chance. The score was two all. The Wellington baeks for a while were not clearing well. Wellington rallied sharply, McCormack sending Cullen away, and he trickily beat Johnston, and sent to the opposite wing, where Barton dashed up and netted with a first-timer. Wellington 3, Canterbury 2.

>■” ' Wellington Loading. This was followed by a clever passing run from one side of the field to the other by Canterbury, ■ but Lucas cleared off Cullen’s feet. Guest was pressed, ans his kick was somewhat faulty. Canterbury were forced back, and a merry assault took place, the ball being dropped three times in front of the bar. Colville did wonders in saving in the melee. Then the Wellington defence was called on, and a rebound off Guest nearly went through, Steel saving against Nelson by giving a corner. At halftime the score was: Wellington 3, Cqntei;bury 2. Second Spell. On resuming Cullen spoilt a good opening by passing to Wison, who was offside. Wellington forced a corner, and nlay was in the visitors’ goal area until Roberts cleared bis lines. Nelson made a good try, but McCormack worried him, and spoilt his shot. Roberts sent in a hot one at 25 yards, Lucas saving from this, and again from Cullen, conceding a corner, the-pressure being relieved by the ball going behind, A rebound off Guest gave Canterbury another corner, which was partially cleared, but was returned bv Roberts, Frickleton letting the ball glide off his back. Lucas was alert, and saved just in time, but Canterbury pressed hard, and Lucas and the backs were kept right busy for a while. At last Wellington attacked again, and there was some lively play. Rigby secured the ball, and Walker,, failing to hold him, fouled him badly, bringing him down so that he had to leave the field. The penalty awarded Wellington was well merited, and Campbell put Wellington another

goal ahead with the penalty kick. Wellington 4, Canterbury 2. A Hard Finish. For a few minutes Wellington played ten men, while Rigby received attention from the first aid men. Campbell saw an opportunity, and sent in a long shot, and Colville had to give a corner to save. The play ranged up and down field, but the Wellington left-wing, while working well together, were not strong enough against such a defence. Frickleton missed an easy chance in front of Wellington’s goal, shooting feebly, and Steel crossed to the right-wing, where Barton' secured, and sent in a stinging shot, which Colville saved. Wellington were now holding their opponents better. Wilson did a neat bit of work when he received from Campbell, putting a pretty touch between the backs, but Leslie’s wild shot sent the ball sky high. A fast right-wing movement by Canterbury saw Allen centre well, Cullen sending wide. Canterbury made great efforts to reduce the lead, but did not succeed until, within three minutes of time, when McLeod put one in out of Lucas’s reach. The final score was: Wellington 4, Canterbury 3.

TRIAL MATCH A POOR EXHIBITION. The sides chosen from Welington first division players met at No. 2 ground, Basin Reserve, yesterday morning for the selectors to choose a team to represent Wellington in the Football Association Trophy match against Auckland. The teams lined up as follow: — A (Black): Wyatt (Diamonds), G. Wotherspoon (Diamonds), Haines (Petone), Bilby (Institute), Bird (Marist), Main (Waterside), Worth (Y.M.C.A.), Dickinson (Institute), Longbottom (Waterside), Cudby (Marist), Stark (Diamonds). Main was captain. B (White) : Kirkland (Thistle), Newton, Duffie (Seatoun), Smith (Petone), Kershaw (Seatoun), Hanson (Brooklyn), Nicholl, Lowry (Hutt), Fenton (Petone), Torrington (South Wellington), Batchelor (Hutt). Kershaw was captain.

Evidenty the players were feeling the strain of their various matches on Saturday, as neither side" produced good football; in fact, very few of the players took the game at all seriously. The A team opened up well and for the first 15 minutes’ play the game was fast, but the pace gradually slackened, and the football became of a very scrappy nature. Fenton opened the scoring for the Whites, snapping up the ball when Wyatt failed to clear. Shortly afterwards Longbottom put the Blacks on equal terms, scoring from a melee in front of the goal. Just before halftime Dickinson and Cudby scored. Cudby’s goal was the outcome of a splendid movement by Stark and Longbottom. In the second half Fenton • scored for the Whites by pushing the ball into the net when Wyatt failed to clear. After this the Whites took possession of the game and scored three more goals through Worth, Longbottom, and Cudby, making the total score 6 goals to 2 in their favour. Mr. E. Watts carried the whistle.

REPRESENTATIVE FOURTH GRADE MATCH WELLINGTON TOO GOOD FOR CANTERBURY. Although not showing njany pretentions towards brilliancy, the WellingtonCanterbury fourth grade fixture was a fitting curtain-raiser to the more important game at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon. The teams were as follow: Wellington: Outhwaite; McLean, Sissons; Willis, Lyons, Duffy; Foster, ■ Sutherland, Wilson, • Eager, Harrison. Canterbury: Taylor;' W. Bourne,' Strong; Cook, Patterson, Fail; Linnigan, Sharr, Porteous, B. Bourne, Lethwick. The Canterbury boys were a more stocky set than their opponents, but what the Wellingtonians lacked in weight they made up for in cleverness. Canterbury were kept on the defensive for the greater part of the game, but-on occasions they showed their qualities as an attacking force, and a couple of times came close to scoring. In the first spell, Wellington had two goals to their credit, Wilson and Sutherland each notching a point. The second naif was very one-sided, and Canterbury had five goals registered against them. Wilson (2), Sutherland. (2) and Harrison were the contributors. Sutherland gave a elever exhibition at insideleft,; although small, he has the qualities of a player of class. Taylor, the South Island goalie, deserves a word of commendation. He dived at the low shots whole-heartedly, and effected some splendid saves. Cook, a Canterbury half, played well, while McLean, Lyons and Wilson performed creditably for Wellington. The final score was: Wellington 7, Canterbury 0.

CANTERBURY V. SOUTH CANTERBURY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, June 3. At Association football Canterbury beat South. Canterbury by 2 goals to 1.
