In his lecture on evolution at Auckland Professor Sperrin-Johnson remarked that much had been made of the tail. How ever, it was interesting to note, in passing, that children had actually with tails up to 10in. long. Of course these tails are cut off; parents do. not like them,” added the .speaker with a smile. After dealing with the fact that the tuatara lizard had a under the outer covering of the top ot its head, the lecturer added that traces of a third eve, which might have tunc ' Hnnedin ages past, were also found on the top of the human skull. Reverting to child life again, when a slide was projected showing a three weeks old child hanging by its hands to a length of rope, the professor said children possessed far greater proportionate strength in their hands than adults. The attitude of the child in hanging was distinctly similar to that of an ape. So, even ‘in childhood, the human being was revealing recapitulatory tendencies. While an adult required practice, it was almost second nature to the child to hang on.
