RAILWAY MISHAP
DERAILMENT AT NGAHAURANGA HUTT TRAFFIC HELD UP ’Pm flic on the Wellington-Hutt line was held up for some time last night owing to. the derailment of one of the cars of a well-filled suburban train at Ngahauranga. Seeing the signal set against him when ehtering the station the driver of the 5.41 train from Lambton to Waterloo brought his train to a standstill. Then, acting on a hand signal (which countermands a danger warning) he proceeded slowly towards the station. The tracks had, however, been set to allow goods trucks standing in a siding to cross the “up” line and take the “down” line on the seaward side to Wellington. Finding himself switched on to the siding as a result of this, the driver of the , passenger train stopped and reversed. Owing to the cross-pull of the points one of the rear passenger ears left the rails and canted over, snapping a signal standard. Some of the passengers became excited and jumped out, receiving slight injuries. These were removed to their homes in private cars, and there were no casualties for the Free Ambulance, which arrived promptly on the scene. Passengers were conveyed to their destination by buses, and during the operations of the crane gang, which was rushed out to clear the line, a bus service to Petone was maintained, trains running from Petone to the stations further up the line. It was expected that the line would be clear shortly after 11 p.m.
