LEVIN NOTES
Levin,. May 30. At the special meeting .of the Horowhenua County Council Mr. G. A. Monk was re-elected as chairman for the ensuing year, which will be his fifteenth year in that position and nineteen years as councillor. Many present spoke highly of his administrative ability, and the great need of his supervision until the completion of the main highway. 'The scheme for growing poles for electric purposes was again opened up at the last Power Board meeting, but was vetoed on the voices, although several thought the planting of sand dunes should not be overlooked. Since work has ceased on the Palmerston North deviation the Levin-Marton one has revived very strongly in this district. The mileage saved by passengers and haulage of goods would be very considerable if the huge triangle at present formed could be crossed , t The first snow of the year In this district was seen on Monday, it forming a thin mantle on the main range of the Tararuas, which was a surprise, because it had been so mild for May. After Saturday’s Rugby matches the Horowhenua senior championship is as follows:—Shannon. 7 points: Foxton, <; Hui Mai. 5: Wanderers. 5: Otaki, 4. The president of the Levin branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in Ins report shows a satisfactory state of affairs. The balance-sheet shows that at March 31 there was h credit of £122 in the various accounts, the total receipts being £-23. During the year £7 7s. had been donated to the veterans’ homo at Auckland.
