FOUL AIR

DEATH OF CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, Maj- 31. The danger to the health of children from sleeping with adults in a closed room was "emphasised by the Coroner, Mr. Wilson, at an inquest last night on a five-year-old child, Doreen Theresa Davison, who died from diphtheria and pneumonia a few minutes after admission to the hospital. The mother stated that the child had been ill for nearly a fortnight with a cough, which was not regarded as serious. A doctor was not called till Wednesday. The doctor stated that he had found the windows and door closed. The air in the room was foul. The Coroner said that the cause of death seemed to be a rnther surprising failure on the part of the mother and grandmother to realise the seriousness of the illness. The child had been sleeping with the grandmother in foul air. There was nothing to indicate criminal negleet however.
