GELIGNITE EXPLOSION

ACCIDENT WHILE BLASTING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Taihape, May 31. Another blasting accident occurred at 10.30 this morning. A roadman named Patrick Irwin, a son-in-law of Herbert Whale, was placing plugs of gelignite in a big rock at Bennett’s Siding, near Taihape, when one plug stuck in a hole. Irwin tried to force it down with the handle of a shovel. There was no detonator or fuse in the hole, but an explosion occurred. Irwin had his jaw smashed to pulp. He lies in a precarious condition in the hospital. Whale was knocked down, but sustained no serious injuries. He was able to return home after medical attention.
