GRAVE ALLEGATION
BLENHEIM MAN CHARGED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim. May 6. It is reported that a sensational incident, possibly without precedent in the Dominion, occurred in Yelverton on Saturday aftgjnoon. It is alleged that after a dispute in regard to family matters a young man was knocked out, and while in a state of unconsciousness was operated upon with a pocket knife and maimed for life. It is further alleged that upon completing his purpose the assailant bandaged the victim and put him to bed in his house, but being unable to stop the flow of blood from the wounds, became alarmed, and after a lapse of four or five hours summoned medical attention. The victim was removed to hospital, where he is lying at present. As a sequel to the alleged occurrence William Henry Osgood appeared in the Police Court this morning charged (1) that on May 4at Yelverton he did assault one Archibald Bennie Meek so as to cause actual bodily harm., and (2) that on the same date, with intent to maim, he did disfigure the said Archibald Bennie Meek. Senior-Sergeant Clarkson represented the police, nt made no statement in regard to the facts of the case. He applied for a remand for eight days, and indicated that a further remand would then be applied for. He also asked that the first charge should be withdrawn, and suggested that as the remaining charge was a very serious one bail should be increased. The Bench granted a remand and fixed bail at £4OO. and one surety of a similar amount.
