C.T.A. BUILDING

THE NEW STRUCTURE DESCRIBED

The new building to be erected shortly by the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ Association in Customhouse Quay, to relieve the present structure in Victoria Street, is estimated to cost £74,000 and will take eighteen months to complete. The tender of Messrs. Irvine and Burr has been accepted for the work. The building, which will be of seven stories, will be constructed in such a way that, should the association at any time decide 'to occupy the whole, providing residential accommodation, it will be a comparatively simple matter to make the necessary alterations. There will be two entrances, one from Customhouse Quay and the other from Victoria Street. To the left of the main entrance in Customhouse Quay will be the offices of the secretary and his staff, and to the right of the entrance will be the strangers’ room. On each side of the entrance there will be two elevators. There will also be a staircase on the right for the use of tenants. Adjoining the entrance vestibule there will be a commodious lounge, which will lead into the main bar. The bar will be 33 feet by 60 feet. On the first floor, overlook Customhouse Quay there will be a comfortable reading room, and at the back, over the main bar, there will be a large billiard room with sufficient space for four billiard tables. A small bar for the use of members will be attached to the billiard room. The front wing of the second floor will be taken up by a board room, which will serve the club as a meeting room, and a library, to which will be attached a! rest-room for members wives. The rear wing of the second flood will be devoted to card rooms. The third, fourth, fifth-and sixth floors will be subdivided into offices in the front and sample-rooms in the back. Access to the sample-rooms will. be obtained through an entrance in Victoria Street, and a goods lift will be provided. On the top floor of the building will be the members dining-room, the servery, kitchen, staff rooms, and storerooms. Attached to the dining-room there will be a balcony, overlooking Customhouse Quay. On the roof there will be quarters for the caretaker, and there will also be a promenade for members. The building will be steelframed, and it is intended that the fittings will be up to date and complete in every way. In October last the Commercial Travellers’ Association called for competitive designs of the proposed building, and Mr. C. 11. Mitchell, of the firm of Messrs. Atkins and Mitchell,' was unanimously adjudged the winner.
