MOUNTED RIFLES
CAMPED AT LEVIN. Palmerston North, May 3. The Manawatu Mounted Rifles are at present in camp at Levin, where they will remain until May 11. In camp are 156 men and 132 horses, representing a district extending from Ohakune to Wellington. Seventy more will arrive tomorrow, and training will be carried out on the Hannon estate. The men are under canvas in the outside enclosure of the Racing Club's grounds, and the buildings on the course are being used. Lieut.-Colonel A. S. Wilder, D. 5.0.. M.C., is in charge of the camp, and G. M. McGaskill, N.Z.S.C., is adjutant captain. CAMP AT WAVERLEY. Wanganui, May 3. The Rev. B. D. Ashcroft, of Marton, has been appointed as padre to the forthcoming camp, when the officers and n.e.o.’s of the Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles will go under canvas for 10 days. Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., and Brigadier J. H. Whyte, D. 5.0., D.C.M., will inspect the camp. Colonel C. G. Powles. C.M.G., D. 5.0.. honorary colonel to the regiment, will also be in camp. Not the least important factor will be the regimental band, under the baton of Mr. G. Buckley. Lieut.Colonel W. R. Foley, M.C., is the commanding officer. The camp will be quartered at Waverley.
