SOUTH WELLINGTON SCHOOL
ANZAC DAY SERVICE. Anzac Day was celebrated at the South Wellington School by a service in the school hall, where there was a large attendance of scholars, ex-pupils, parents, and friends. The Rev. C. V. Rooke conducted the service. Colonel G. T. Hall, the president of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association, addressed the gathering. Colonel Hall told the story of Anzac, and reminded the pupils of their duty to carry on the lessons learned from this wonderful undertaking and so to live that the sacrifices made would not be in vain and to make every effort to bring about the blessilng of universal peace. Appropriate hymns were sung, and the pupils recited the lines: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We shall remember them.” After a short silence had been observed in memory of the fallen the proceedings closed with the National Anthem. Some fine samples of Maori art were recently discovered by Mr. D. H. Graham, when visiting the Far North, and they will be forwarded to tlie Auckland Museum (says the “Herald”). Among the collection is a greestone axe in a perfect state of preservation, not having been touched by fire. The axe measures about Bin. in length, and has a sharp cutting edge. One side has not been rounded off, and this gives it an unfinished appearance. Many wooden implements of the Maoris have also been found, including clubs and paddles. Mr. Graham intends to make further visits to the Far North.
While investigating the reasons for a sudden stoppage of water recently, the Whangarei borough workmen discovered an eel, Klin, in length, which had made its way into the pipe.
