FLOODS IN NELSON

MISHAP TO MINISTER’S CAR By Telegraph—Press Association. Nelson, April 30. A total of 4.26 inches of rain was recorded in the Nelson district in the last twenty-four hours. The downpour caused the heaviest floods experienced for many years. Serious damage was done on the bank of the Brook Street stream. Miss Turton, officer in charge of the Tourist Department, was the greatest sufferer. She had her garden washed away, and her house dangerously undermined. The low-lying areas in the town were flooded. The train services were interrupted this morning by washouts at Spring Grove. Motor services made the connections. It is anticipated that the normal service will be resumed this afternoon. Throughout the country districts many smaller bridges and culverts were washed away. The Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore) and his party, proceeding to the West Coast yesterday, were blocked on Spooner's Range, and when returning to Nelson had a narrow escape. Passing through a flooded creek, the driver missed a submerged roadside bridge, the wheels on one side only of the car taking it, with the result that the car leaned dangerously over and filled with the water. The occupants escaped on the upper side. Everything in the car was soaked.
