DECISION
“It wasn't that he had met another girl that he liked better. He hadn’t. He could truthfully say that he liked Susie, as well as any girl he had ever met. Blit he didn’t want to marry her. He didn’t want to marry anyone—not for a very long time, anyhow. Why, he was only twenty-three 1 He would have to tell ter, that was all.” “He had made up his mind to break it off many a time before this, but when he met Susia he found he had not sufficient courage to carry it through.” “Anyhow, he was really determined this time. He would tell her to-night when she called at the house. He bad promised to take her to the pictures.”
“A knock at the street door made his heart begin in thump, but he steeled himself to do as he had decided. ‘James, hurry up!’ called his mother. ‘Here’s Susie waiting for in to take
her to the pictures V He ran down the stairs. Susie was in the parlour. She stood up and smiled as he entered, hut she did not expect him to kiss her. He had told her that he thought a lot of kissing was just foolishness, and she . had accepted his ruling, as she always did. Well, he had better get it over. ‘Susie,’ he began, ‘do you mind if we won’t go to the pictures to-night?’ “Instantly she was all concern. ‘Why, James. Are you ill?’ ‘No, but I want to have a very serious talk with you. Sit down.’ “Susie obeyed; she looked pole and frightened, almost as if she guessed. It was surprising how hard it- was to proceed. ‘We’ve been going about together a long time now,’ he went on. ‘Seven years.’ replied Susie, quietly. «•Well’—the words seemed to come of their own volition, without any help from him —‘don’t you think it’s time we began to think about getting married r ” —Annice Crawshaw, in the “Manchester Guardian.” > ■
