A KINDLY ACT
Pericles, the great Athenian statesman, was one day dealing with public business in the Forum, when ah ignorant political opponent came up and abused him in a most abominable manner: Pericles said nothing, but went on placidly with his business. Later he had to go t 6 another part of the city, and there the man followed him, continuing to pour out a stream of railing accusations, almost without cessation. Still the statesman was silent, and, although the abuser followed him the whole day, he said never a word in reply. At last it was time to go home, and the man continued to follow Pericles to his very door, pouring out insult after insult. The sun had now sunk and darkness was beginning to fa'll. “One moment, friend, - ’ said Pericles to his assailant; and calling a servant from inside the house, he ordered him to light a lamp and see the stranger safely home. | The man. astounded at such unlook-ed-for kindness, at once ceased his abuse, and went home a wiser and a humbler man.
